Senior Mechanical Engineer
Location: Peterborough Hybrid working available

Who are we?

Alliance is a collaborative partnership between eight industry leaders - Anglian Water, Balfour Beatty, Barhale, Binnies, MMB, MWH Treatment, Skanska, and SWECO - along with our extended supply chain. Together, we deliver over half of Anglian Water’s capital investment programme.

As we prepare for AMP8 - our most ambitious and innovative asset management period yet - we’re growing our team to meet the challenge. With a focus on sustainability, digital transformation, and engineering excellence, there’s never been a more exciting time to get involved.

Your role

We’re seeking a knowledgeable and driven Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and technical delivery of mechanical systems across water and water recycling (non-infrastructure) projects. In this senior role, you’ll be responsible for ensuring that engineering solutions are technically sound, efficient, sustainable, and aligned with project goals.

What you’ll be doing:
  • Leading mechanical design activities across a portfolio of projects, from initial feasibility through to detailed design and delivery support.
  • Producing and reviewing technical specifications, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and industry standards.
  • Coordinating closely with project managers, multidisciplinary teams, suppliers, and contractors to achieve integrated project outcomes.
  • Supporting hazard studies, design reviews, and safety assessments such as HAZOP and HAZCON.
  • Driving innovation by adopting digital design tools, promoting offsite construction, and contributing to decarbonisation efforts.
  • Providing support during construction and commissioning phases, resolving technical queries and ensuring buildability.
  • Offering technical leadership to junior engineers, reviewing their work, and helping them develop their skills.
  • Feeding into continuous improvement and technical governance processes, sharing lessons learned and best practice.
What we’re looking for:
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering (or a related discipline); Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status is desirable, or working towards it.
  • Strong experience delivering mechanical design within the water, utilities, or infrastructure sectors.
  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical systems, UK design codes, CDM regulations, and health and safety requirements.
  • Competence in using CAD and other design tools (e.g. Autodesk Plant 3D, or similar).
  • A collaborative mindset, with experience working in multidisciplinary environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical detail clearly and confidently.
  • A problem-solving approach with a drive to innovate, improve efficiency, and embed sustainable thinking.
Why join us?

At Alliance, you’ll be part of a genuinely collaborative environment where your voice is heard, your ideas are encouraged, and your growth is supported. Working on projects that directly impact communities, you’ll help to build a resilient and sustainable water network for the future.

We offer flexible working, clear development pathways, and the chance to work with experts from across eight leading organisations. It’s not just a job - it’s a place to grow, lead, and make a meaningful difference.

We’re passionate about creating an inclusive and respectful workplace where everyone can thrive. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and actively encourage individuals from underrepresented groups to apply.
