PURPOSE OF THE ROLEVertical Video Senior Journalists are responsible for driving brilliant moments into attention grabbing video - for the video playlist and for video on site and on social, including a range of planned and breaking news carousels. You'll oversee colleagues working across platforms, and have the ability to keep across multiple content areas to ensure the best clips are reaching our audiences. You will collaborate with teams in News, Sounds, Sport, iPlayer and others, every day.
WHY JOIN THE TEAM
Join the team to help shape the future of video in news storytelling. The vertical video carousel is the first mobile-first video tool for BBC News' website and app and provides a unique opportunity for us to reach audiences with creative new formats and digitally native storytelling methods. YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
• As a Senior Journalist on the team, you'll work with colleagues across the BBC and within News to showcase BBC content at its best.
• There's a huge opportunity to engage audiences we don't reach as well on platform. Vertical video is a key opportunity to do that - on and off platform.
• You'll be creative in the way you think about commissioning and storytelling, experimenting with different ways to reach audiences.
• You'll lead by example, sharing knowledge and skills with more junior members of the team and colleagues in other teams to produce content to the highest standard.
• You'll act as a facilitator of change, clearly communicating and distributing best practices between teams.
• You'll be confident at scripting, producing, and editing video - guiding correspondents and reporters to deliver in a way that works for all audiences.
• This role involves weekend and shift working.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
• A high standard of editorial judgment, writing ability and production skills based on substantial broadcast journalism experience.
• Ability to work effectively as a member of more than one team.
• Deliver content of the highest standard and within the required timeframe using available resources.
• Thorough understanding of how to tell stories for different audiences, with an emphasis on making news and other content, accessible and engaging to a broad range of audiences.
• Experience using audience research and analytics to develop ideas and grow audiences.
• In-depth understanding of the tools and techniques used to produce digital video in the BBC.
• Must be proficient in FCP and/or Adobe Premiere.
• Ability to think creatively and come up with new ideas for storytelling in video.
• Ability to allocate work to a team and check progress; ensure the professional contribution of staff and the quality of output.
