Senior Fellow in Vascular and Resuscitative Surgery TheLeeds Vascular Institute is a thriving and busy vascular surgery departmentthat is based within one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe (LeedsTeaching Hospitals NHS Trust).

Weare looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic vascular surgeon to join our teamas a Senior Fellow in vascular and resuscitative surgery.

Themain focus areas of this fellowship will be in diabetic limb salvage, chroniclimb threatening ischaemia, resuscitative surgery and open vascularsurgery. This particular post is aimedat Specialty Registrars at level ST6+ or above

Main duties of the job Therewill be participation in a 1:9 vascular and resuscitative surgery acute rota.The applicant should hold ATLS certification (or an equivalent traumaqualification).

Therewill also be opportunities to participate in teaching, simulation, audit andquality improvement projects at the candidates discretion.

Job responsibilities DUTIESOF THE POST

TheSenior Fellow in Vascular & Resuscitative Surgery post is a 6 month to 1year post with a view to further extension by mutual agreement. The main focuswill be within the diabetic limb salvage and chronic limb threatening ischaemiaservices. The fellow will also join the resuscitative and vascular surgerymiddle grade on call rota (1:9) and broadly train in elective and urgentvascular surgery. The fellowship will be focused mainly on open vascularsurgery and that will also carry a resuscitative surgery element. Thesuccessful candidate will therefore be expected to understand advanced traumalife support and damage control surgery principles. The fellow will also haveexposure to complex and revision vascular surgery. While the main focus of thefellowship will be on open surgery, there will also be opportunities toparticipate in endovascular procedures both in the interventional radiologysuite as well as in our state of the art hybrid theatre. The successfulcandidate will be supervised by Mr James Forsyth. There will be regularsupervisor meetings to identify learning needs and review progress. Clinicalduties are inclusive but not exhaustive of the following:

Ward management

Outpatient clinics (mainly DLS and CLTI)

Operating theatre (acute, elective and day-case)

Emergency assessment and management of vascular and resuscitative major traumapatients

Post-operative intensive care reviews

Discussions with patients relatives

MAINOBJECTIVES OF THIS FELLOWSHIP

Develop advanced, evidence-based and multi-disciplinary management strategiesfor patients with diabetic foot disease

Develop advanced, evidence-based and multi-disciplinary management strategiesfor patients with chronic limb threatening ischaemia

Be able to perform high quality lower limb bypass surgery (including exposureto ultra-distal bypass surgery)

Be able to perform a trauma laparotomy (+/- adjunctive measures such aspacking, splenectomy, stapling off bowel ends, creating a laparostomy etc.)

Be able to perform a clamshell thoracotomy (+/- adjunctive measures such aslung twist, suturing cardiac stab wounds, compressing the descending thoracicaorta etc.)

Be able to effectively manage vascular extremity and vascular torso trauma

Gain improved exposure to open aortic, carotid, renal access and amputationsurgery.

TEACHINGAND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING

Thejobholder must take responsibility in agreement with his/her line manager forhis/her own personal development by ensuring that Continuous ProfessionalDevelopment remains a priority. The jobholder will undertake all mandatorytraining required for the role.

Thisis a 6-12 Month Fixed Term Contract to provide a period of training.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following:
  • Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English.
  • OR
  • Achieved the minimum score of 7 across all 4 of the following categories in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (An overall minimum score of 7.5)
  • OR
  • Achieved the minimum Grade B across all 4 of the following categories in the Occupational English Test (OET) in medicine in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (You must provide your candidate number)
  • If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills, but do not have evidence in one of the above forms, they must provide alternative supporting evidence of language skills
