Job Description
Senior Diagnostic Radiographer Practice Educator

The Royal Marsden Hospital is one of Europe's largest oncology centres and was the world's first hospital dedicated to cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and education, with sites in Chelsea, Sutton and Cavendish Square. The Diagnostic Imaging service provides an essential service to the Trust and includes CT (currently installing two photon counting scanners at the Chelsea site), MRI (1.5T and 3T), mammography, interventional radiology, ultrasound, general x-ray and fluoroscopy. We are inviting applications from enthusiastic diagnostic radiographers for a practice educator role. Applicants will preferably have significant postgraduate experience in radiology, education and development of registered and unregistered health care professionals. The successful candidate will have clinical skills within x ray and CT and/or MRI. A postgraduate qualification and/or further education within practice education/mentoring is desirable. The successful candidate will facilitate learning and continuing development of all registered and unregistered health care professionals within the imaging department, ensuring that education is responsive to service developments and relevant frameworks.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as a senior radiographer as part of the multi disciplinary team. They will work closely with imaging leads, to deliver high quality training and development activities across the imaging modalities, in accordance with the imaging department strategy. The post holder will be on site five days per week Monday to Friday (core hours), and will require rotation between all sites (Chelsea, Sutton and Cavendish Square). They will be expected to be flexible in their approach and support learners in the workplace at all levels of practice, as well as aligning to the education and training requirements of the Quality Standard for Imaging Quality Mark. The post holder will provide expertise within practice education with skills that align with the radiographer education and career framework practice educator role.

Job responsibilities

To ensure protocols and standards are maintained and improved to produce best diagnostic information and patient care; to perform imaging examinations as an operator under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations; to follow the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) guidelines, local rules and the departmental imaging guidelines and standard operating procedures; to be competent within designated areas of imaging and support others; to identify less optimal areas of practice and collaborate with imaging leads to improve workflow, image optimisation, and alignment with national, trust and local policies; to comply with accurate patient identification procedures; to ensure referrals are justified correctly and booked in a timely manner; to give advice on the validity of requested examinations; to be aware of radiation safety and ensure the safety and protection of patients, staff and carers; to perform standard equipment Quality Assurance (QA), record results accurately and alert the Superintendent radiographer/medical physics as required; to ensure fault reporting and equipment documentation is completed and maintained where required and ensure staff are aware of this documentation.

Person Specification Education/Qualifications
  • HCPC registration
  • DCR/BSc in Diagnostic Radiography
  • Cannulation certificate or completed workbook
  • Postgraduate certificate
  • Teaching qualification or accreditation as a SOR
  • Practice Educator or evidence of further study within practice education
Experience
  • Postgraduate experience in x ray and cross sectional imaging.
  • Evidence of good organisation and communication skills - verbal and written.
  • Evidence of leadership and team building.
  • Experience in supervision of radiographers and students within a clinical setting.
  • Ability to audit practice and make recommendations for change.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and decision making ability.
  • Teaching and presentation skills.
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD.
  • Evidence of care of oncology patients.
Skills / abilities / knowledge
  • Ability to use word processing software and IT systems.
  • Evidence of working within a team.
