We are a close-knit team of passionate scientists, engineers, and creative thinkers, all working together towards our shared goal - a future where drugs are discovered more quickly, brought to patients more cost-effectively, and through the use of less animal experimentation.
Day to day our cohesive team design, manufacture, promote, and support organ-on-a-chip solutions that enable our customers to do something incredible - recreate three-dimensional human organs and tissues in the laboratory to better understand human physiology, disease, and the effectiveness of new drugs.
If you are thinking of joining us, our values define who we are, describe our culture and shape what we aspire to be. They can be found here .
About the RoleCN Bio is seeking to add a Senior Development Engineer to its Product Development team to contribute to the development of new laboratory instruments, consumables and accessories, and support the manufacture of its existing product portfolio. Reporting to the Director of Production and Engineering, the Senior Development Engineer will also work closely with our Manufacturing and Bio-assay Development teams.
Role Requirements Product DevelopmentAid the development of new hardware and organ-on-a-chip consumable products through:
- Creation of product requirements, concepts, prototypes, and test platforms for engineering and bio-assay development.
- Creation, capture, and documenting of product design outputs such as Solidworks CAD models, engineering drawings, component specifications, and process specifications.
- Creation of design outputs which are able to be easily manufactured through processes such as injection moulding, CNC milling and turning, and laser cutting.
- Verifying design decisions through application of engineering theory, calculation, simulation, and testing.
- Support the bio-assay team in operating product prototypes and test platforms to validate their biological models.
Transfer product designs into manufacture through:
- Creation of BOMs, manufacturing and assembly instructions.
- Definition and creation of outgoing and incoming inspection procedures for externally manufactured components and assemblies.
- Design of jigs & fixtures to aid assembly and equipment for testing product functionality & performance.
- Collaborate with the manufacturing team to train operators in the inspection, assembly, and testing of new products.
Ensure CN Bio's existing products remain manufacturable through:
- Addressing product design and manufacturing issues raised through obsolescence, non-conformance, change requests, and customer feedback.
- Ensure changes are controlled within CN Bio's change control process.
- Improve the manufacturability of products through improvements to their design and assembly.
Ensure CN Bio's new and existing products remain compliant through:
- Contributions to product compliance and regulatory documentation (e.g. declaration of conformity, DFMEAs, technical file).
- Support of type testing activities (e.g. EMC) for new products and introduction of existing products into new regions.
- Understanding the requirements of relevant scientific laboratory equipment safety standards such as IEC 61010-1.
- Understanding the regulatory requirements relevant to scientific laboratory equipment in the United States of America, United Kingdom, and European Union (e.g. UKCA, Low Voltage Directive).
- Cultivate effective professional relationships within all areas of the organisation, especially Product Development, Bio-assay and Manufacturing teams.
Lead and Support R&D projects and project managers through:
- Helping to define work packages, the effort required to complete them, and their required duration.
- Communicate and update progress on tasks and work packages on project plans and tracking the effort expended.
- Ability to confidently operate Solidworks and manage design data in PDM.
- Ability to confidently create engineering drawings of machined and injection moulded parts aligned to relevant standards such as BS 8888.
- Ability to confidently create manufacturing process maps and bills of materials.
- Ability to confidently understand and design pneumatic circuits with common pneumatic components (regulators, solenoid valves).
- Ability to confidently understand, design, and document wire harness and cable assemblies.
- Able to define and create clear and concise product assembly, inspection, and test instructions for use by assembly operators in a manufacturing environment.
- An understanding of geometric design and tolerancing (GD&T) and how to apply it to engineering drawings.
- An understanding of manufacturing processes such as CNC milling, turning, and injection moulding and their impact on the design of components.
- An understanding of change control processes aligned to relevant quality standards.
- An understanding of product safety standards relevant to scientific laboratory equipment such as IEC 61010.
- An understanding of product regulatory requirements in the UK, EU, and USA such as UKCA, CE marking, and Low Voltage Directive.
- Ability to confidently create, run, and analyse the results of finite element simulations in Solidworks.
- Able to confidently calculate the characteristics or performance of pneumatic circuits and devices.
- Ability to read and understand schematics of digital electronic circuits, especially for embedded systems and devices.
You are a team player whose excellent interpersonal skills allow you efficiently work and collaborate within an interdisciplinary team. You will have a high degree of self-motivation which allows you to create, design, and implement realistic engineering solutions to CN Bio's products. Your prioritisation and organisation skills will be essential as you balance competing demands on your time. You shall demonstrate a genuine willingness to share your knowledge and skills with junior members of the Product Development team and be able to communicate complex topics clearly and concisely (both orally and in writing) with peers and senior managers.
