Senior Design Manager

Overview

We are looking for an experienced Senior Design Manager to lead the design delivery of major industrial & logistics developments across the UK. This role will focus on a diverse portfolio of steel frame projects from large scale warehousing and distribution centres to advanced manufacturing and industrial facilities, ensuring coordinated, efficient, buildable solutions aligned with programme, budget and quality objectives.

The position is based around St Albans and the surrounding Hertfordshire area, covering multiple live and upcoming projects.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership and accountability for the technical requirements of project solutions throughout the project life cycle.
• Develop and maintain processes related to delivery, review, assurance, progress measurement and document control.
• Create and maintain the Design Deliverables Register and Design Assurance Documents.
• Cycle monthly Design Progress Tracker to report on progress and KPIs.
• Identify and implement improvements to general processes.
• Provide training and support to the design team to adopt the established processes.
• Ensure consistent approach throughout the design team.
• Identify opportunities to increase process efficiency.
• Manage the interface with external or in house design teams on behalf of the Project Manager.
• Represent the design department at internal and external meetings and act as a focal point of contact within the department when the Design Engineer is absent.
• Liaise with other departments and project teams regarding design requirements.
• Undertake site visits when appropriate.
• Allocate design tasks within informal internal teams while maintaining overall team performance.
• Act as project design engineer if appointed.
• Ensure all work follows company procedures and maintains a high level of professionalism.
• Identify and evaluate chargeable work, preparing adequate records of time spent.
• Collect and archive feedback on design work in accordance with procedures.
• Prepare conceptual designs for safe, practical, and economic solutions in line with current legislation.
• Produce detailed designs, calculations, risk assessments and sketch drawings according to standards.
• Check and evaluate the design work of staff and external designers.
• Summarise quantities relating to design tasks for pricing purposes.
• Maintain responsibility for storage, filing and archiving of design documents.
• Lead the design process within Work Winning to provide sufficient, economical designs for tender purposes.
• Identify and manage risks throughout all work stages.

Qualifications

• Degree qualification in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline.
• Proven experience as a Senior Design Manager or Design Manager in main contracting or major construction delivery.
• Strong background delivering industrial, logistics, warehousing or large steel frame construction projects.
• Experience managing multidisciplinary design teams on complex live projects.
• Strong knowledge of UK Building Regulations, planning processes and statutory compliance.
• Experience through pre construction and delivery phases.
• Member of CIOB or ICE (desired).
• CSCS card.
