Proposition
90% of the world's trade at some point travels on a ship. The energy required to power the shipping industry for 1 year is enough to power New York city for 60 years. Decarbonising shipping means changing fuels, operating patterns, and actual equipment onboard ships. There is a need to develop infrastructure to get the fuels to ships, new ships that enable zero emission and develop the new fuels themselves. The opportunity to decarbonise the industry is tremendous but so are the challenges to do so. The root of the challenge is that ships last for a long time - 20 to 40 years. Ships that we build today may still be operating in 2050. The cost of new fuels is significantly higher than current dominant shipping fuels. Shipping & Maritime in Shell is acknowledged by stakeholders across the industry to be the leader in provision of ship management, assurance, and technology services. We are proud of our long history as the Group's centre of maritime expertise, facilitating global movement of the energy products that support, and raise, the standard of living for millions of people. If you are up for a challenge and have a personal purpose to enable the decarbonisation of the shipping industry, you could be what we are looking for.

Where you fit in (Dimensions)

Shipping and Maritime is Shell's centre of expertise for all Shipping and Maritime matters. Enabling Shell's customer facing businesses through Maritime HSSE, operational excellence, commercial delivery, ship management, maritime risk management, emergency response, localised maritime knowledge and relationships, and technology development, innovation & digitalisation. Our team of experts lead industry coalitions in maritime safety, shipping decarbonisation, and port and operational efficiencies. We aim to be the partner of choice through transformative collaboration and creating value through strong commercial capability, operational excellence and data driven risk management.

Crude, Products and LNG Freight Trading

The global LNG, crude & products freight trading desks (i) provides freight solutions for all the freight requirements of the Shell Group and (ii) monetizes the underlying flows by a combination of position taking, optimization and exposure consolidation.

This is enabled by both time charters and spot trading to generate the highest sustainable risk-adjusted returns, whilst providing optimal solutions for physical freight requirements of the Shell group.

Freight Trading activities require Long Term Chartered carriers for all trading desks including the largest and most technically sophisticated in the world, the footprint also includes coastal and river barges, drilling rigs and ships, together with maritime assurance and advice for FLNG, FPSOs, FSRUs, SBMs, and supply boats, anchor handlers, and tugs. The associated emissions

footprint of such a large fleet needs to be managed carefully under the "license to operate" mentality.

This is where you fit in; under a progressively stringent emissions regulatory landscape, Senior Commercial Analyst key role is to enhance value for Trading & Supply's fleet of vessels. This key development role is a permanent position within the organisation and will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to work with a diverse shipping portfolio.

The role enables a conduit between Shipping & Maritime and T&S in order to first of all analyze the raw data being acquired off the Time Chartered ships and thereby support the implementation of operational and technical measures to improve ship performance and efficiency, monitor and report on relevant key performance indicators to measure savings, grow a culture of energy efficiency in Shell's fleet operations, and assess commercial impact of emissions costs/penalties in a dynamic GHG regulatory landscape. To that end, the role involves the handling and analysis of high quantities of data in a wide variety of formats, and as such a high degree of digital competency and agility will be required to meet stakeholder expectations.

The role is London based, however it may involve some international travel. This role reports to the Commercial and NBD Manager, Europe & Africa.

What's the role (Accountabilities)

The purpose of this position is to provide primary support to the Short- and Long-term Freight Trading and to the global Operations teams in delivering value enhancement through optimisation across the supply chain, with a specific focus on shipping. Critical to this is the transition from a point solution-based approach to seamless optimisation across the supply chain utilising digital solutions and challenging the status quo where possible.

In addition to support to the business, the role will support the facilitation of Shipping & Maritime's Ultimate Potential Value programme.

The Senior Commercial Analyst role is integral to the function of the performance team, including technical, operational and commercial aspects. This role will also provide:

First line support to the Freight Operations, Freight Trading and Optimisation teams with regard to all aspects of vessel's fuel, heel and cargo management and to support and facilitate the implementation of performance management strategies on T&S vessels in order to provide cost and environmental savings.

Best practice efficiency advice and training to stakeholders within both Shipping and Maritime and T&S, as well as the ship owners as part of relevant forums.

Support Trading & Ops in implementing strategies for improving operational and technical efficiency across T&S fleet and identification of opportunities for replication to other fleets.
  • Identify ways to obtain, process and automate data for use in enhancing value opportunities across the supply chain with a focus on shipping data management.
  • Varying scope of analytical support for stakeholders; everything from multi-year macro-performance of the fleet as a whole, to empirical performance of equipment onboard a specific vessel for a particular voyage.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives in support of improving the efficiency of all aspects of the commercial operations for voyage and port operations.
  • Assist in the preparation of operational efficiency reports as directed by Trading and Ops to all interested parties within Shell and, as required, to external technical managers of the Shell owned, managed and chartered fleet.
  • Assist in benchmarking of all owned, managed and chartered vessels.
  • Provide feedback and input to the ongoing development of Shell's data analytics strategy and tools.
  • Assess impact of evolving GHG regulations (IMO, EU, Regional) on overall fleet and participate in projects to establish measuring/monitoring/reporting of such emissions.
  • Provide maritime expertise during Business Performance Reviews including benchmarking on aspects such as fleet performance, Opex reviews, claims management.
  • Support Shipping & Maritime's Value programme, which is being maintained in Fit4 Ultimate Potential, including support to Value Managers around the globe in maintenance of the dashboard and preparing presentations for Shipping and T&S LT.
What we need from you (Skills and Requirements)

The role is unique insofar that it requires a combination of technical & operational knowledge, coupled with strong analytical skills as well as commercial understanding of a shipping trading business; specifically:
  • The incumbent must possess very strong Digital and Analytical skills as stakeholder requirements are diverse and often required at short notice - in extreme circumstances analysis can be required within the span of a single call to support a Freight Trading decision.
  • Critical digital competencies include Alteryx, Python, Power BI and Spotfire. Excel experience will help, but the magnitude of data involved in this role render this skill alone insufficient.
  • Complementary digital competencies would also ideally include SQL experience and familiarity in working with APIs.
  • Must have credibility to influence and garner trust from internal stakeholders (including trading operations and subject matter experts) and external stakeholders (including third-parties, ship owners and vessel crews).
  • Must display tact and diplomacy and a high degree of cross-cultural awareness.
  • A passion to produce efficiencies in an operational fleet environment.
  • Must display innovation and tenacity in advocacy of performance improvement plans.
  • A high capacity to learn and adapt to a changing digital landscape, liaising with IT Support teams where appropriate and innovating immediate solutions where required.
  • A Maritime background and understanding of the LNG supply chain and how the interdependencies create opportunities for optimisation would be welcomed, and when coupled with the skillsets mentioned above, might be a differentiator in the short list and selection process.
  • A passion to produce efficiencies in an operational fleet environment.
  • Must display innovation and tenacity in advocacy of performance improvement plans.
