Senior Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Emergency Medicine - QIClosing date is 26 February 2026
We are looking for a Senior Clinical Fellow in PEM, at middle grade level or above (see person specification), to help take the department forward. The fellowship provides an excellent opportunity to develop a "specialist interest" while gaining additional experience in PEM in a hospital that looks after a financially and ethnically diverse population.
This job will entitle you to protected 20% of your time for Quality Improvement development within the Emergency Department. We are looking for a candidate who can deliver a significant quality improvement project within the Emergency Department. On appointment to this post, a discussion between the successful candidate and the supervisor would occur, to prepare for a QI project that is both of interest to the candidate and the department.
Main duties of the jobPrevious projects (as examples) that have been completed in the department include:
- Guideline project
BWC offers bespoke QI training with support on how to deliver this through "Silver QI training" which the successful candidate would have available to them. This offers support and guidance for the candidate to be able to deliver the project successfully.

Job responsibilitiesThe post-holders will be an integral part of the clinical team and will carry out the following duties:
- Reception, examination, diagnosis, resuscitation, treatment and management of patients in the Emergency Department until appropriate transfer to inpatient facility or discharge home. This includes both medical and trauma patients.
- Running flow, safety and clinical decision making of department at night () when consultant is on call from home.
- Supervision of more junior medical staff in the Emergency Department.
- Participation in the Trust Major Incident Procedure.
- Participation in delivering teaching to undergraduate students attached to the Department.
- Attendance at departmental meetings as appropriate.
- Participation in annual NHS appraisal.
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Success in one of the following: oMRCPCH, oMCEM, oMRCP, oEquivalent qualification (eg FRACP)
- Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment
- Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent by the time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice including:
- Make the care or your patient your first concern
- Protect and promote the health of patients and of the public
- Provide a good standard of practice and care
- Treat patients as individuals and respect their dignity
- Work in partnership with patients
- Be honest and open and act with integrity
- By the time of appointment, achievement of one of the following or equivalent:
- Level 1 training competences in Paediatrics.
- CT1, CT2 & CT3 Acute Common Care Stem (ACCS) Emergency Medicine (EM) competences at Core Trainee level
- Evidence of 36 months training at CT1, CT2 and CT3 level in the specialties that make up the ACCS and CT3 EM programme, but must include a minimum of 6 months in EM and a minimum of 3 months in specialties other than EM. If musculoskeletal has not been completed then a minimum of 9 months EM is required.
- Eligibility to work in the UK
- Competencies in acute paediatric care: Up-to-date APLS/EPALS Out of hours experience relevant to the job
- Relevant speciality clinical knowledge: Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job
- Clinical judgement: Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need
- Practical skills: Shows aptitude for practical skills required in the job
- Clinical governance:
- Demonstrates understanding of importance of risk management
- Track record of engaging in clinical governance
- Evidence of active participation in audit
- Aware of own limitations and can demonstrate experience in learning from errors
- Research:
- Demonstrates understanding of importance of research
- APLS/EPALS instructor ATLS/ETC provider
- Has completed personal audits
- Evidence of degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions, or additional evidence based medicine & e-learning modules
- Evidence of contribution to departmental guidelines.
- Evidence of active participation in research publications in peer review journals, presentations at academic meetings or poster presentations
- Instructor (or a recommendation for Instructor) status in an advanced life support course (ALS, ATLS, ETC, EPALS, APLS) or equivalent course
- Evidence of receiving positive structured feedback for teaching
- Evidence of completion of a teaching course
- Management: Evidence of interest and experience in management and leadership
- Learning & Personal Development:
- Demonstrates interest and realistic insight into paediatric emergency medicine
- Understanding & awareness of particular requirements & demands of working with children & their parents
- Demonstrates reflective approach to practice & commitment to personal development
- Extracurricular activities/achievements relevant to paediatrics and/or EM
