Senior Clinical Fellow (Head and Neck Oncology Surgery)

A fellow in Maxillofacial Surgery with an interest in head and neck oncology is required to work within the regional South-West London Maxillofacial Surgery Network centered around the department at St George's Hospital. The unit is closely associated with the Thomas Tatum Head and Neck Unit and provides treatment for a large number of patients with head and neck cancer. The post offers an excellent opportunity to be part of a large Head and Neck Oncology service covering the South West of London with a population of 1.7 million.

Duties and responsibilities cover the full range of head and neck oncology, including reconstructive surgery; the successful applicant will also be expected to participate in the management of Maxillofacial trauma and to undertake research. There is strong emphasis on the multi disciplinary approach to patient care.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be expected to work in close collaboration with all the staff in the Maxillofacial Department. The timetable may be changed on discussion with the consultants and the Care Group Leader. The post holder will also be expected to take part in local and regional audit and clinical governance, and to contribute to the organisation and supervision of junior medical staff.

As this is a Fellow position, the appointee is expected to have completed the specialist training in their respective country and must provide evidence of attainment of their specialist qualification. The appointee must also be able to work in the UK (i.e. possession of HSMP or EU residency status).

The appointee must be doubly qualified in Medicine and Dentistry.

Job responsibilities

On Call - Maxillofacial Surgical Services in south west London (and surrounding counties) are delivered by a network of hospitals including St George's, Kingston, Ashford, St. Peters, Epsom, St. Helier and Croydon University hospitals. St George's is the 'hub' for this network, undertaking all inpatient activity. The on call arrangements for the registrars are in the form of a 1:5 rota with prospective cover, providing cover for the entirety of the South West London Maxillofacial Network outside normal working hours.

The Maxillofacial fellow is expected to contribute to the general on call maxillofacial surgery rota at specialist registrar level. A UK driving licence or equivalent would be an advantage.

Timetable - The Fellow will attend the Head and Neck Oncology operating lists (Monday and Tuesday), the Head and Neck MDT and following clinic. All sessions will be on the St George's Hospital campus. Additionally the Fellow will be expected to play an active part in the educational activity of the department as well as caring for the in patients and participating in clinical managerial activity as required by the Consultants.

Qualifications
  • MBBS/MFDS/MRCS or equivalent
  • Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery or equivalent
  • Higher Degree
Experience
  • Comprehensive experience in the management of facial trauma, dento alveolar pathology, oral medicine and generic in patient management skills
  • Head and neck surgical oncology, surgical dermatology
