Job overview

We are recruiting for a Senior Clinical Coder who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

The Clinical Coding Department at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust in Stevenage, has a well structured team design that includes training, career development and personal development plans.

The rewards for a well motivated person to join our team is a training programme that commences on a Band 4 and progresses to a Band 5.

During this time it is expected that you will study for the National Clinical Coding Qualification NCCQ . Although this has a high pass mark, the rewards are that once you are qualified a Recruitment and Retention Premium of 15% on top of your salary will be applied.

Main duties of the job

The role of a Clinical Coder is to provide an effective, accurate, timely and consistent clinical coding service to the Trust and to ensure all coding quality targets are achieved.

To code diagnosis and clearly defined treatment for inpatient and outpatient activity according to the coding conventions of ICD10 (International Classification of Diseases) and OPCS4 (Operation Procedure Classification Standards).

Data sources used include case notes, discharge summaries, histology results, Chemocare and other manual records.

This data is essential for the effective management of the Trust and directly influences the Trust's income in line with the 'Payments by Results' process.

Person specification Qualifications / Training

• GCSE (Grade A-C) Human Biology, Biology or Combined Science
• Professional qualifications General training qualifications Other specific attainments
• Educated to degree level or equivalent relevant
• Accredited Clinical Coding Qualification

Previous Experience

• NHS experience as a Clinical Coding Clerk for 3 or more years
• Attended and passed NHS Clinical Coding Standards Course/Refresher Course in last 3 years
• Study, problem solving, interrogation of data
• Experience of using and analysing data

Secondments/Fixed term
