Job OverviewWe are seeking a Senior / Principal Consultant to join our growing Sustainable Transport team. The role is flexible based on experience but will suit a motivated transport professional with strong project management skills and experience in sustainable transport, active travel, transport planning or a similar field. You will manage and deliver high-profile projects with local authority clients, leading on projects including community engagement, parking review, transport strategy, policy development, liveable neighbourhoods and school streets. Alongside project delivery, you will play an active role in client relationships and business development, bringing new contacts, ideas, and opportunities to support company growth.
Responsibilities- Lead the design, planning, and delivery of sustainable transport and active travel projects.
- Manage the full project lifecycle, ensuring delivery on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
- Oversee consultation and engagement programmes, including stakeholder workshops, co-design events, and EQIAs.
- Produce high-quality reports, strategies, and technical outputs for clients.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with local authority officers, stakeholders, and communities.
- Line-manage junior consultants and support their professional development.
- Contribute to business development by supporting bid writing, proposals, and client frameworks.
- Ensure robust project governance including financial tracking, QA, and risk management.
- Relevant degree in transport planning, urban planning, human geography, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum 5 years' experience in sustainable transport, active travel, behaviour change or transport planning.
- Strong project management skills with proven ability to manage complex projects from inception to delivery.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and partnership working skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with experience preparing client reports and presenting findings.
- Ability to prioritise and manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
- Experience working in or with local authorities and a good understanding of council processes.
- Business development experience or an interest in developing these skills.
- Familiarity with policy and statutory frameworks related to Healthy Streets, active travel, and sustainable transport.
- Project management certification (PRINCE2, APM) or professional membership (e.g. CIHT, TPS).
- Experience delivering School Streets, Low Traffic/Liveable Neighbourhoods, or active travel strategies.
- Microsoft Projects or similar software.
- Experience using CAD.
