Make a meaningful contribution to the lives of children and young people by becoming a school governor in the Hounslow borough. Thousands of volunteers across the country already give their time and expertise to support schools and academies, and we are currently seeking new governors in Somerset.
School governance is one of the largest volunteer roles nationwide, offering you the opportunity to play a vital part in shaping education within the Hounslow community
Role and impactServing as a school governor is both stimulating and rewarding. You will help influence positive outcomes for pupils, support the local community, and develop valuable skills. The role also provides excellent experience in strategic leadership, making it an ideal opportunity for those looking to broaden their professional expertise.
ResponsibilitiesGoverning boards are responsible for providing strategic direction and ensuring strong accountability, oversight, and assurance of educational standards and financial performance.
Governors meet 2-3 times a term. Governors are also encouraged to carry out school visits, prepare for meetings, and attend training to support their development. The average time commitment is around 5-8 hours per month, depending on the school and any additional responsibilities undertaken. Meetings are usually held outside of working hours, and some employers are able to offer volunteering time to support your involvement.
Qualifcations and who should applyYou do not need to be an education professional to become a governor. Anyone aged 18 or over can apply, and boards particularly value volunteers with specialist skills, such as finance or business experience, to ensure a balanced and effective governing board.
