Role Overview
The Risk Officer will be responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of the company's enterprise-wide risk management framework. This individual will ensure that all material risks are identified, assessed, monitored, and appropriately mitigated in line with the company's strategy, risk appetite, and regulatory obligations.
The Risk Officer will work closely with the UK Board, Risk Committee, and senior management to embed a robust risk culture across the organisation and to support risk-informed decision-making at all levels of the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design, implementation, and ongoing development of the company's Risk Management Framework, including policies, procedures, and risk appetite statements.
- Provide independent oversight and challenge across all key risk areas, including underwriting, reserving, operational, conduct, investment, and counterparty risk.
- Deliver regular risk reporting and updates to the Board and Risk Committee, including escalation of emerging or material risks.
- Lead the design and delivery of the Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA), including stress testing and scenario analysis.
- Coordinate closely with actuarial, finance, underwriting, and compliance teams to ensure risk-adjusted capital planning and decision-making.
- Monitor the risk profile of the company against approved thresholds and ensure timely remediation of any breaches.
- Oversee risk and control self-assessments (RCSAs), key risk indicators, and incident tracking across all business functions.
- Support the company's internal governance processes, including third-party oversight, internal audit coordination, and the evaluation of new business initiatives from a risk perspective.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with UK regulatory expectations under Solvency II, PRA/FCA guidance, and relevant supervisory statements relating to governance and risk management.
- Advise senior management on regulatory developments and their implications for the firm's risk strategy.
Requirements
- Senior-level experience in enterprise risk management within a UK-regulated (re)insurance environment.
- Strong understanding of risk governance, control frameworks, and applicable UK regulatory regimes, including Solvency II and the UK Senior Managers & Certification Regime (SM&CR).
- Demonstrated ability to work closely with boards, regulators, and internal audit/risk committees.
- Familiarity with delegated authority business models, reinsurance structures, and capital adequacy considerations.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional risk initiatives and implement a proportionate but effective second line of defence.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to deliver constructive challenge and board-level insight.
- Degree-qualified; professional risk or actuarial designation preferred (e.g. IRM, CERA, CFA, or equivalent).
