Research Assistant for Impact Case Study in Philosophy/Education
Posted 20 hours 52 minutes ago by Cardiff Union Services Ltd
Are you interested in school education? Do you have experience/knowledge of classroom toolkits or want to learn more? Do you care about the harmful effects of beauty standards on young people?
Two Philosophy lecturers based in ENCAP are seeking a Research Assistant to briefly join them on their impact case study 'Aesthetic Justice'. This work will be vital to the acceleration and expansion of the study, for potential submission to the REF2029.
The relevant impact pathway is the harmful effect of beauty standards on young adults/children. We plan to develop a classroom toolkit for secondary schools in Wales which uses philosophy to conceptualise/articulate the harms done by contemporary beauty standards to young adults'/children's self-image/self-esteem and overall wellbeing, but we also plan to infuse the toolkit with philosophical tools to improve wellbeing around self-image by including alternative notions of 'beauty'.
The Research Assistant will aid this part of the project by increasing the academic team's familiarity with school classroom toolkits and pedagogical methods. This will mainly involve:
- research of such classroom toolkits ranging from general thematic toolkits, to specific toolkits focused on beauty standards (e.g. the Dove 'Self-Esteem' project).
- reviewing and presenting the results of this research by producing a portfolio of different examples of classroom toolkits showcasing their strengths and weaknesses from an educational point of view, and with a focus on the impact case study's theme of harmful beauty standards.
- establishing contact with the Welsh Curriculum and investigate the processes of how to add a finished toolkit to the curriculum.
Due to the nature of the role, postgraduates are particularly welcome to apply as the role may suit the skills developed over your studies. While we don't require the candidate to be from the colleges of Social Sciences or Arts & Humanities, it is desirable that you have some familiarity with pedagogical theory, curriculum reform, and/or social contexts of education.
When applying, please indicate your course and year of study. You do not need to have any specific availability in the 2 month period, and will work remotely (UK based) with regular check-ins with the project PI Dr Daisy Dixon.
