Research Assistant - Bhatia Group

A Research Assistant position is available in the Bhatia Group at The Sainsbury Laboratory, University of Cambridge. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research aimed at uncovering how the plant hormone cytokinin regulates morphogenesis using Arabidopsis thaliana leaves as model.

They will join a young and growing research lab and will be expected to bring enthusiasm, and a proactive commitment to developing research and scientific excellence and a positive, collaborative lab culture.

The post is available for one year in the first instance, with the possibility of extension subject to funding.

The position offers an exciting opportunity to work in a stimulating and supportive research environment, with access to state-of-the-art facilities and ample opportunities to develop new technical and scientific skills.

The successful candidate will be responsible for plant growth and maintenance, phenotyping, crossing, DNA extraction and genotyping, Agrobacterium-mediated plant transformation, cloning (restriction enzyme-based, infusion PCR-based, and gateway), quantitative real-time PCR, CRISPR-Cas9 based genome editing and time-lapse confocal microscopy on Arabidopsis leaves. In addition, the candidate will contribute to the wider activities of the laboratory, including scientific outreach, general lab support, and collaboration with other lab members to facilitate research and maintain a positive and productive research environment.

Qualifications

• Applicants must have a bachelor s degree in plant biology, genetics, molecular biology or relevant discipline
• Excellent communication skills in both oral and written English are expected
• Previous experience in laboratory research and Arabidopsis thaliana handling is essential
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Excel is a essential, and strong computer literacy is necessary
• Excellent observation skills, and problem-solving abilities are essential
• The ability to work independently and take proactive measures when needed is essential
• The ability and enthusiasm to learn new techniques is required
