Job Description

A vacancy has arisen for a RegisteredNurse to work in the Day Hospice unit.In this role you will work as part of the nursing team ensuring thedelivery of high quality, holistic specialist palliative care.

Main duties of the job

Current NMC registration is essential, and applicants will be required todemonstrate a high level of clinical practice, be self motivated and have anawareness of the needs of patients requiring specialist palliative care. You should demonstrate professionaldevelopment with a willingness to develop your clinical skills as required.

This is an essential clinical role.

Job responsibilities

The Key Elements of the role in the DayTherapy / Outpatient setting:

1.To provide specialised knowledge and skill inthe care of the terminally ill patient and their family.

2.To provide professional, high quality andefficient patient orientated care.

3.To provide a consistently high standard ofpatient care.

4.To teach and support other members of LOROSstaff as necessary.

5.To deputise for the person in charge at DayTherapy / Out Patients as Necessary.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Duties include:

1.Practical nursing care of the patient inaccordance with LOROS procedures.

2.Planning and application of principles ofsymptom control with other team members.

3.Offering psycho-social and spiritual supportto the patient and their family.

4.Supporting the relatives and friends duringthe patients illness

5.Promoting a relaxed and informal atmospherewhilst maintaining a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.

6.Support the medical team as required withclinical procedures.

7.Take responsibility in implementing care inthe outpatient setting in the absence of the Day Therapy & Out-PatientsManager.

8.Carrying out holistic needs assessments asnecessary for day care.

9.Liaise with the wider inter-disciplinary teamabout a patients care, as necessary.

EDUCATIONAL AND PERSONNEL DUTIES INCLUDE:

1.Assisting senior staff with the induction andsupport of newly appointed trained staff

2.Supervision and assistance in the teaching ofother student nurses and medical students, nursing staff and volunteers in theunit.

3.Generating and maintaining a friendly andsupportive team spirit with all LOROS staff.

4.Attending all relevant training, conferencesand study days at the discretion of Day Therapy & Out-Patients Manager.

5.Participating in audit, evidence and clinicalgovernance programme.

6.Participate in daily nursing meeting.

7.Lead and participate in MDT meetings.

8.Lead and participate in implementing care inthe outpatient setting.

9.Assist with transport of patients as necessaryto and from LOROS.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES INCLUDE:

1.Being aware of the Health and Safety at WorkAct, ensuring that related procedures are carried out correctly and recordingall accidents to patients, staff and visitors.

2.Supervising and participating in the custody,recording, maintenance and administration of controlled and other drug stocksin accordance with LOROS policy.

3.Assisting in maintaining stock levels ofsurgical stores and other equipment.

4.Following LOROS procedure for maintenance ofrepairs and equipment.

5.Participating in the keeping of accuratenursing records, according to LOROS policy.

6.Being aware of any complaints, takingimmediate action by reporting to Day Therapy & Out-Patients Manager/Head ofDay Care and Community Services in accordance with LOROS policy.

7.Contributing to the re-evaluation of nursingprocedures.

8.Maintaining confidentiality of patients andrelatives.

9.Supervising and co-ordinating the work of thenursing staff in Day Therapy in the absence of a Manager/Senior RegisteredNurse in accordance with LOROS policy.

10.Supervision of meals given to patients bycatering staff and volunteers ensuring that all patients have the diet theyrequire.

Support thecollection of activity data in relation to outpatient services.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse (Adult branch) with current NMC registration
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Willingness to undertake further training and education in palliative care
  • Teaching / Mentoring/ Assessing Qualification or equivalent
  • Degree or diploma in Adult Nursing
Skills & Abilities
  • Able to prioritise and cope with competing pressures
  • Teaching experience
Knowledge
  • Awareness of needs of patients requiring specialist palliative care
  • Basic IT knowledge
Experience
  • Special interest in palliative care
  • Knowledge of handling difficult situations
  • Previous experience of caring for patients with palliative care needs
  • Experience of co-ordinating a shift
