About the roleWorking as an authorised officer of the Council, you will contribute to a wide range of Environmental Health and Public Protection duties. The role includes inspections, investigations and surveys, complaint handling, sampling and monitoring work, supporting enforcement cases, preparing letters and notices, maintaining clear records, and helping to promote compliance through advice to the public, businesses and partner organisations.

Strong IT skills are essential, including confidence in Microsoft 365 applications and the ability to work effectively in a modern digital environment.
For applicants for the Public Protection Enforcement Assistant post: a degree or equivalent qualification is required, and the role also requires the ability to manage confidential information, attend locations across the county at short notice, and use own travel arrangements.
For applicants for the Public Protection Officer role: you should meet the full person specification for that post, including the required qualifications or equivalent experience and the broader level of professional competence expected of a Public Protection Officer.
Career progression and developmentThe Public Protection Enforcement Assistant post offers a structured pathway to a Public Protection Officer on successful completion of the agreed qualifications, competencies and portfolio of evidence, normally within two years or sooner. Development may include training across areas such as food safety, environmental protection, health and safety, public health, animal health and welfare, and evidence gathering, depending on service needs.
The progression route is intended to support the successful candidate to develop practical competence in core areas of public protection work, with progress reviewed periodically by the line manager.
