Professorship of Socio-Legal Studies

The Faculty of Law is among the most distinguished law schools internationally and is home to the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, one of the world's leading centres for research on law in its social context.

The Faculty of Law and Wolfson College intend to appoint to the Professorship of Socio-Legal Studies with effect from 1 September 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter. This statutory professorship offers an exceptional opportunity to provide intellectual leadership in a field that has been central to Oxford's research strengths for more than fifty years. The successful candidate will also hold a Professorial Fellowship at Wolfson College.

The appointee will provide world class leadership in socio legal studies, contributing to the strategic development of the Centre for Socio Legal Studies and the wider Faculty. They will undertake internationally recognised research, secure significant external funding, develop interdisciplinary collaborations, and play a leading role in shaping the future direction of socio legal scholarship at Oxford and beyond. The Professor will contribute to teaching and graduate supervision, mentor early career researchers, and help sustain the Faculty's vibrant and inclusive research culture. They will also contribute to academic leadership within the Faculty and, as required, serve as Director of the Centre for Socio Legal Studies.

As a Fellow of Wolfson College, the successful candidate will join one of Oxford's most international and interdisciplinary graduate communities and contribute to the governance and intellectual life of the College.

Candidates will be internationally recognised scholars with an outstanding record of research achievement in socio legal studies, evidenced by influential publications, intellectual leadership, and a proven ability to secure research funding. They will demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence in research, teaching and mentorship, together with the ability to foster collaboration and support an inclusive academic environment.
