Processing Foreman

Department: Material Processing & Machine Shop

Reports To: Fabrication Director

Supervises:

  • Processing Leads (2)
  • Processing Personnel
  • Machine Shop Personnel (1-2 Machinists)

Compensation Range: Wage based on experience and quality of work

The Processing Foreman oversees the Material Processing Department and Machine Shop, ensuring that all materials and components are prepared accurately and delivered on schedule to fabrication and other downstream departments.

This position is responsible for department leadership, process development, production planning, quality oversight, staffing, and operational efficiency. The Foreman works through two Processing Leads who manage daily production flow, supervise employees, and coordinate material movement.

The Foreman ensures all processing operations cutting, rolling, bending, sawing and machining operations support fabrication schedules and meet company quality standards.

Key Responsibilities Department Leadership & Planning
  • Manage overall department performance for processing and machine shop operations.
  • Establish daily and weekly production priorities based on fabrication schedules.
  • Coordinate workflow between processing, machining, fabrication, and paint departments.
  • Allocate manpower between burn tables, plate rolls, press break, saws, material handling, and machining operations.
  • Support Processing Leads in resolving production issues and workflow bottlenecks.
Production Oversight
  • Monitor department production performance and ensure schedule adherence.
  • Ensure burn tables, plate rolls, saws, and machining equipment are utilized efficiently.
  • Verify work orders, nests, machining prints, and cut lists are production-ready.
  • Coordinate machining requirements for:
    • Pre-fabrication machining (holes, tapped holes, precision components).
    • Post-fabrication machining (boring, finishing, or tolerance correction).
Quality Assurance
  • Establish and enforce department quality standards.
  • Audit processed and machined parts for dimensional accuracy, cut quality, roll radius.
  • Ensure material identification, heat number traceability, and part labeling are maintained.
  • Address machining or processing defects and implement corrective actions.
Workforce Development
  • Train and mentor Processing Leads and machine shop personnel.
  • Support cross-training between processing equipment and machining operations where applicable.
  • Conduct employee performance reviews for department personnel.
Safety & Equipment Management
  • Enforce safety procedures for cutting, machining, rigging, and material handling.
  • Ensure proper guarding, PPE usage, and machine safety procedures.
  • Monitor equipment condition including:
    • Burn tables
    • Plate rolls
    • Saws
    • Machine shop equipment
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance and repairs.
Systems & Documentation
  • Ensure accurate production tracking in Tekla PowerFab GO.
  • Monitor part tracking and job progress.
  • Review production reports and department performance metrics.
  • Report production performance and issues to the Fabrication Director.
Duties & Qualifications
  • 5-10 years steel fabrication or plate processing experience
  • Strong understanding of machining operations and fabrication tolerances
  • Leadership experience managing shop personnel
  • Experience using Tekla PowerFab preferred
  • Ability to read fabrication and machining drawings

  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods (8-12+ hour shifts)
  • Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl for prolonged periods
  • Reach overhead and work with arms extended
  • Climb ladders, work in manlifts up to 25 feet above ground
  • Work in confined spaces and at elevated heights when required
Schedule Requirements
  • Ability to work extended hours, including overtime, weekends, or swing shifts as needed to meet project deadlines
