Principal Technologist - IT Operations

A government organisation is recruiting for a Principal Technologist to help build an IT Operations function serving government and the wider public sector for the first time.

Day to day duties:

• Help build the team and develop a 10-year IT Operations vision and strategy
• Lead research into how mature IT operations are across the public sector today
• Create future-state options and roadmaps, including how agentic AI could change current ways of working
• Support Spending Review planning for your area
• Work with senior stakeholders across government, explaining complex technical ideas in plain language
• Support the delivery of new and existing operational technologies
• Build a network of peers, speak at events and host community events
• Help colleagues develop skills in your specialist area

Skills and experie nce required:

• Significant experience in IT Operations and/or Software Development, ideally in government
• A track record of delivering large-scale technology and operations change
• The credibility to influence senior stakeholders and drive decisions
• Experience assessing high-risk, complex proposals and designing approaches to them
• Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences
• Experience working with technology suppliers
• The ability to share knowledge across organisational boundaries and make change last
• ServiceNow, Salesforce, any platform product and a range of SaaS (Software as a Service) products, Microsoft 365 suite

This isn't a typical technologist or architecture role. You'll work with the Deputy Director and the team to shape how IT operations are run across the public sector, and help solve some of the country's most important digital challenges.
