Overview

Are you an experienced Mechanical Engineer with a passion for creating sustainable solutions? Join Stantec and help us tackle our communities' urgent climate, environmental, and efficiency challenges!

We are seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join us in our office in Leeds or Cambridge. With hybrid working allowing for a combination of in-office and home working, this role would suit an experienced Mechanical Engineer who wants to take their next step in their career within an industry-leading consultancy by working on exciting projects in the water sector.

Across Stantec, we are building on a highly successful period of growth. We enable the delivery of sustainable development and infrastructure projects that adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change. We are also responding to the current ecological crisis in the UK by designing infrastructure that conforms to the Eel Regulations 2009.

Role and responsibilities

As part of this role, you will be involved in the whole project life cycle from feasibility and optioneering through to detailed design and construction support including site surveys and investigations. You will be responsible for working and liaising with project managers, technical leaders, design engineers, clients, supply chain partners, contractors, planners, and other stakeholders to achieve positive outcomes for the projects and community. You will also manage and guide the more junior team members and help with their development.

Responsibilities
  • Involve in the full project life cycle from feasibility and optioneering through to detailed design and construction support, including site surveys and investigations.
  • Collaborate with project managers, technical leaders, design engineers, clients, supply chain partners, contractors, planners, and other stakeholders to deliver positive project outcomes.
  • Provide technical leadership to the Flood and Coastal Mechanical team and support the development of junior engineers.
  • Contribute to design outputs such as General Arrangement Drawings, 3D models, Control Philosophies, and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams.
  • Deliver engineering input to collaborative design discussions, technical workshops, safety reviews, including HAZOPs and ALMs.
  • Assess existing site infrastructure to develop and deliver mechanical design for lowland drainage pumping stations.
  • Incorporate awareness of the Eel Regulations 2009 and their implications on flood and coastal pumping stations.
  • Provide construction and commissioning services for pumping systems and water systems.
About You / Qualifications
  • Experienced Mechanical Engineer, ideally chartered with the IMechE.
  • Experience in mechanical design, and ideally in pump station optioneering, design, construction management, and commissioning.
  • Proven ability to produce and review technical outputs such as technical specifications, reports, and schedules.
  • Experience sizing and designing pumping systems and water systems; familiar with collaborative planning reviews and solution designs.
  • Ability to deliver input to design outputs in collaboration with other disciplines and to communicate effectively with clients and design engineers.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to present technically to clients; participate in workshops and safety reviews.
  • Capability to provide technical leadership and development support to junior engineers.
  • Understanding of how lowland drainage pumping stations operate and experience evaluating existing site infrastructure for mechanical design.
  • Awareness of the Eel Regulations 2009 and their implications on flood and coastal pumping stations.
  • Interest in energy, infrastructure, and water sectors in a mechanical engineering capacity.

Most importantly, you will embody and support our values of client focus, designing with community in mind, collaboration and service excellence.
