About the business unit

We help conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators around the globe. From preparing the business case and advising on related issues - such as revenue, procurement, and environmental legislation - to delivering the completed infrastructure and helping maintain it. Our planning, engineering, environmental and management skills cover the whole project cycle. We play a major role in developing and delivering the Global Transport Sector Strategy.

Overview of the role

We are seeking an experienced Chartered Engineer to be part of our Transport and Mobility Solutions Division in Birmingham. You will be required to combine managerial and technical responsibilities, inspire teams to deliver projects to quality, budget and timescales.

You will be offered, and be expected to take on, a high degree of accountability and able to energetically contribute to growing the Urban Transit & Mobility team's profile and work portfolio through successful project delivery and engaged participation in business development. We are looking for proactive people to join our team to manage design teams in delivering the next generation of urban transport and highway schemes across the UK based on solving social, environmental, and economic challenges to decarbonise transport and create sustainable communities.

As an experienced Chartered Engineer, you will be expected to work in coordination with our other offices across the UK and overseas.

As a Principal Engineer, you will be responsible for:
  • Managing the planning, design and implementation of major mass raid transit projects for Regional Transport Bodies, Local Authorities, Transport Operators or Contractors to comprehend and interpret data, develop innovative solutions, and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards
  • Promoting and ensuring adherence to H&S policy and procedures
  • Leading a portfolio of projects, ensuring delivery to client requirements, programme and budget including controlling project resources and monitoring against budget
  • Preparing and managing work programmes to deliver to deadlines including contributing to bids
  • Developing and maintaining excellent client relationships
  • Mentoring and developing junior staff
Candidate specification

The successful candidate will meet the following criteria:

  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or related discipline, or extensive equivalent experience
  • Chartered Engineer with a proven record of technical leadership on highway and infrastructure projects
  • Experienced in managing multi disciplinary rapid transit (or other transport infrastructure) design projects, including planning and controlling programmes, budgets, and resources
  • Strong understanding of highway design standards (Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) / Specification for Highways Works (SHW) / Manual for Streets) and design risk assessment
  • Engineering principles and knowledge of Light Rail Safety & Standards Board guidance is desirable
  • Able to communicate confidently and professionally with colleagues, fellow professionals and clients at all levels (written and verbal)
  • Experience in preparing fee proposals, contributing to business development, and building client relationships, including with local authorities and government clients

  • Knowledge of highway and rapid transit design principals
  • Experience of engineering design calculations
