Job Description

The Primary Drama Teacher plays a key role in nurturing students' creativity, confidence, communication skills, and artistic expression across all Primary grades (Preparatory-Grade 4). Through engaging drama lessons and memorable performance experiences, the Drama Teacher supports the school's 3Cs educational philosophy-developing Conceptual Understanding, Competencies, and Character in every child.

The role includes weekly drama lessons for each class, creative planning and delivery of the Winter Shows, and close collaboration with Form Tutors, English teachers, and the EPA team.

Key Responsibilities

1.Teaching & Learning:

  • Teach one weekly Drama lesson for each class from Pregătitoare to Grade 4
  • Design and deliver lessons that develop
  • Confidence, expression and stage presence
  • Creative thinking and imagination
  • Communication and collaboration
  • Listening and improvisation skills
  • Body movement, storytelling and role play
  • Create a safe, inclusive learning environment where all students feel encouraged to participate and take creative risks
  • Adapt activities to suit diverse learning needs, abilities and language backgrounds (Romanian/English).

2. Curriculum & Planning:

  • Plan drama lessons aligned with school curriculum expectations and age-specific developmental goals.
  • Integrate cross-curricular themes (PBL, literacy, school values).
  • Prepare lesson resources, scripts, prompts and performance materials.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and reflection when needed.

3. Winter Shows - Coordination & Lead

The Drama Teacher is the main coordinator of the Primary Winter Shows, responsible for:

  • Designing the artistic vision and structure of the shows
  • Selecting or writing age-appropriate scripts
  • Directing rehearsals during Drama lessons and additional scheduled rehearsals
  • Coaching students on acting, voice projection, movement, and stage presence
  • Collaborating with: English teachers (for language elements & appreciation letters); Arts teachers (posters, invitations, set elements); Music teacher (songs and any other musical components); Form Tutors (student organisation & communication with families)
  • Liaising with the technical team for sound, lights, staging, and logistics
  • Ensuring students feel confident, valued, and proud of their work.

4. Assessment & Feedback:

  • Observe and document students' progress in confidence, collaboration, communication, creativity, and expressive skills.
  • Provide constructive verbal and written feedback to students.
  • Communicate relevant observations to Form Tutors when needed (e.g., social and emotional learning aspects, group dynamics).

5. Class Management & Safeguarding:

  • Establish clear routines, expectations and behaviour norms during drama lessons and rehearsals.
  • Ensure supervision and safe movement during stage practice and performances.
  • Follow all safeguarding procedures and report concerns when needed.

6. Professional Collaboration:

  • Work collaboratively with the Primary Leadership Team, Form Tutors and the EPA team.
  • Participate in parent-student events when drama is showcased.
  • Attend PLD sessions and contribute to school culture and community events.

7. Contribution to School Culture:

  • Model school values and promote a positive, creative, learning environment.
  • Encourage students to express themselves with confidence and joy.
  • Bring enthusiasm, imagination, and a sense of celebration to all drama-related activities.

Desired Qualifications & Skills:

  • Degree in Drama, Performing Arts, Theatre Education, or related field (preferred)
  • Experience teaching drama to primary-aged children
  • Strong classroom management and student engagement skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Creativity, flexibility and excellent communication skills
  • Experience with school shows/performances (preferred)
  • English fluency (and Romanian understanding is an advantage).
