Job Description
Overview

The Arctic is a place of extremes: unforgiving, untamed, and undergoing rapid change. A literal defrosting reveals a multi-trillion-dollar opportunity spanning energy, defence, logistics, research, and infrastructure.

ARD was founded on a paradox. The Arctic is both the next great economic frontier and one of the most hostile environments on Earth. Rich in resources and strategically vital, yet bone-chillingly cold, dark for months, and fundamentally inhospitable to humans. This paradox-an explosion of activity in a place that resists human presence-is why we exist.

Our solution is autonomy.

We build systems that operate reliably and intelligently in the Arctic, so that humans don't always have to.

Founded by record-holding pioneers with decades of polar experience, we take calculated risks on hard problems that matter. If you want to build and deploy ground-up technology with real-world impact, at an inflection point in history that won't reappear, we'd like to talk.

The role

As a Power Systems Engineer, you'll take ownership of the toughest challenge in our product line: delivering reliable energy at -40 C and below. From day one, you'll lead the design, integration, and testing of the proprietary energy system at the core of our stack - from portable high-bandwidth ground hubs to fully autonomous systems - ensuring an uninterrupted flow of mission critical data and asset coordination in the world's harshest environment.

Core responsibilities
  • Architect, build, and iterate ARD's proprietary energy system for seamless integration into our hardware line
  • Serve as the go-to technical lead across for power requirements across electrical, RF, systems, and mechanical interfaces, driving SWaP optimisation at every iteration
  • Ensure uninterrupted power delivery to MCUs, electronic arrays, perception sensors, and autonomous subsystems
  • Lead thermal strategies for batteries and power systems (e.g. chemistry selection, controller, membranes)
  • Test and validate energy systems in both the in-house lab and field deployments
  • Contribute to system safety and compliance testing, working against standards such as UL, IEC, and CE for batteries and electronics.
  • Get hands-on in the field - travel to Arctic test sites and client installations
What we value
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience building battery systems for real-world applications
  • Ability to leverage a deep knowledge in battery chemistry for use in sub-zero environments
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with a portfolio ready to demonstrate
  • Strong familiarly with battery management systems, heat controllers, thermal membranes, and software integration
  • Confident soldering, PCB design, prototyping, and field-testing under pressure
  • Track record of delivering systems from sketch to deployment - managing time, cost, and complexity
  • Ability to operate with a large-degree of autonomy within a lean and competent team
What we offer
  • Competitive compensation
  • Real field exposure - travel to Arctic sites and Outposts when needed
  • Mission-driven culture - focus on impact, not hours logged
