Job Description
Postdoctoral Research Associate Cell Biology & Genomics Visa Sponsorship Available
Overview: An exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join a Wellcome Trust-funded project at the University of Edinburgh's Institute of Cell Biology. You will contribute to cutting-edge research on non-canonical genome transmission in the human fungal pathogen, Cryptococcus neoformans, as part of a highly collaborative international team.
About the Project & Research Focus:
- Cutting-Edge Research: Join a significant 8-year Wellcome Trust-funded research programme led by the Jeyaprakash and Hardwick groups in Edinburgh, collaborating with the Sanyal group at JNCASR, Bengaluru.
- Scientific Challenge: Delve into the fascinating mechanics and regulation of cell division and chromosome segregation in Cryptococcus neoformans, specifically exploring aspects of polyploidy and aneuploidy.
- Methodologies: Utilize a diverse range of advanced techniques including structural biology, live-cell microscopy, genome engineering, and OMICS approaches.
- Recent Research: For an overview of our recent work, please refer to the publications by the Jeyaprakash and Hardwick groups.
Your Role & the Institute:
- Position Details: This is a full-time (35 hours/week), fixed-term position for 3 years. We are open to considering part-time or flexible working patterns.
- Research Environment: You will be based in the Jeyaprakash group within the world-leading Institute of Cell Biology (ICB) at the University of Edinburgh, home to approximately 36 research groups.
- Collaborative Hub: The ICB focuses on uncovering fundamental molecular mechanisms that underpin genomic and cellular structure and function, working with a wide range of experimental systems and fostering strong collaborative links across the university and globally.
- Advanced Facilities: Benefit from state-of-the-art resources including high-throughput DNA sequencing, protein production and purification, biophysical and kinetic analysis, proteomics, and advanced optical and electron microscopy.
- Competitive Salary: Salary for this role is at Grade UE07: £40,497 - £48,149 per annum, pro-rata if part-time.
- Work Environment: Be part of an exciting, positive, creative, challenging, and rewarding place to work within a diverse and vibrant international community.
- Comprehensive Benefits: Access to generous holiday entitlement, competitive pension schemes, staff discounts, and family-friendly initiatives.
Who We're Looking For:
- Essential Qualification: A PhD with proven research experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Single particle cryoEM
- Cryo-electron Tomography
- Protein Biochemistry (specifically with insect cell and yeast expression systems)
- Single-molecule Biophysics
- Attributes: A highly motivated scientist eager to contribute to an interactive research programme and committed to excellence.
Commitment to Equality, Diversity & Inclusion:
- The University of Edinburgh is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment, holding a Silver Athena SWAN award for gender equality, and being a member of the Race Equality Charter and Stonewall Scotland Diversity Champions.
International Applicants:
- Visa Sponsorship: The University is able to sponsor the employment of international workers for this role. Successful applicants will need to satisfy UK Home Office English Language requirements and secure a Skilled Worker Visa.
