The Role

The Estates & Facilities Service are looking for an experienced and reliable Plumbing and Heating Engineer to join their team, carrying out day-to-day maintenance across the University and associated sites. Based within the Estates & Facilities Service, you will undertake mechanical maintenance and installation tasks, supporting other teams and trades as required.

You should be qualified to City and Guilds Advanced standard, NVQ level 3 or equivalent, with recognized apprenticeship or modern training. As part of the Maintenance Team, you will perform repairs and planned preventative maintenance on mechanical plant including heating systems, pipework, pumps, ventilation, water services, and drainage.

The role requires manual handling, working at heights, and occasionally working within ducts. A full driving license is required.

The successful applicant will participate in a 24-hour emergency on-call rota and may work evenings or weekends.

The Estates and Facilities team manages the University estate to support its academic and residential functions, providing high-quality maintenance and installation services aligned with the University's strategy.

Key Accountabilities

  • Perform a wide range of mechanical duties, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, water systems, and fume extraction, ensuring control via Building Management System with training.
  • Carry out PPM, defect repairs, and minor installations, ensuring safety and compliance.
  • Organize workloads and supervise assistants or apprentices, ensuring access for repairs and requisition of parts.
  • Develop solutions for mechanical system faults, use diagnostic tools, and carry out minor electrical works with training.
  • Isolate mechanical services, issue certificates and permits, and liaise with stakeholders during works.
  • Participate in an on-call rota, respond to emergencies, and liaise with security and emergency services as needed.
  • Coordinate with other trades and external contractors, providing feedback on systems and safety issues.
  • Record work accurately using current systems, ensuring compliance with standards and safety legislation.
  • Perform site-specific risk assessments, ensuring safety for all personnel and visitors.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned by management.

The Person

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of plumbing and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve faults in complex systems.
  • Experience in maintenance, repair, and refurbishment in similar settings.
  • Driving license required; experience with University vehicles preferred.
  • Basic electrical skills and membership of Water Industry Approved Plumber scheme (WIAPS).
  • NVQ level 3 or equivalent in engineering maintenance; experience with steam plant and computer literacy are desirable.

Qualifications

  • City and Guilds Mechanical Craft Certificate or NVQ Level 3 in Engineering Maintenance.
  • Gas qualifications including COCN1, CPN1, TCPC1, TPCP1A, CIGA1, ICAE1, CCN1, CEN1, and water regulations certification.
  • Other relevant certifications as needed.
