Plant & Machinery Planned Maintenance Technician / HGV Relief Driver

Location: Chester
Salary: Starting from £35,000 per annum
Hours: Five days per week, 8:00am - 5:00pm, including regular Saturday working

The Role

We are looking for a reliable, hands-on Planned Maintenance Technician / HGV Relief Driver to take ownership of the planned preventative maintenance (PPM) of our plant, machinery, vehicles, and site equipment, while also providing relief HGV driving support when required.

This is primarily a planned maintenance-focused role, with weekends largely dedicated to servicing, inspections, and preventative works while plant is not in production. The successful candidate will play a key role in reducing breakdowns, improving reliability, and keeping our operations running safely and efficiently, while also supporting transport operations during periods of holiday cover, absence, or increased workload.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out planned preventative maintenance in line with maintenance schedules and manufacturer guidelines
Service and inspect mobile plant and site machinery, including loaders, excavators, forklifts, telehandlers, HGVs, trailers, and production equipment
Complete lubrication, filter changes, fluid checks, brake checks, tyre inspections, and general wear-part inspections
Identify faults early and carry out minor repairs where appropriate
Escalate major faults to external engineers or specialist contractors when required
Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs, inspection paperwork, and defect reporting
Support compliance with PUWER, LOLER, DVSA, and other statutory requirements
Liaise with plant operators, drivers, and supervisors regarding plant condition and vehicle availability
Provide HGV relief driving cover when required, including local and regional deliveries
Carry out daily vehicle checks and ensure vehicles are kept clean, roadworthy, and compliant
Work safely at all times in line with site health and safety procedures

Working Hours

Five days per week, 8:00am - 5:00pm
Regular Saturday (and/or Sunday) working forms part of the standard working pattern, with a weekday off in lieu
Weekend working is primarily used for planned preventative maintenance when plant is not in production
Flexibility may occasionally be required to support transport operations

Skills & ExperienceEssential:

Previous experience maintaining plant, machinery, HGVs, or heavy equipment
Strong mechanical knowledge
Ability to follow planned maintenance schedules and work methodically
Good fault-finding skills
Awareness of health and safety within an industrial, transport, or plant environment
Full UK driving licence
HGV Class 1 or Class 2 licence with CPC qualification

Desirable:

Experience with mobile plant (loaders, excavators, forklifts, telehandlers)
Basic hydraulic or electrical knowledge
Welding or fabrication skills
Relevant qualifications (NVQ, City & Guilds, or similar)
Plant or forklift tickets
Experience within aggregates, recycling, construction, or heavy industry
