Job Description

We are looking for an enthusiastic and patient focused Phlebotomist to join our friendly multidisciplinary team 2 or 3 day's a week. Exact days to be agreed.

Main duties of the job

Provide a safe phlebotomy service.

Explain the procedure to patients carefully and methodically.

Put the patients at ease; recognise that some may feel anxious.

Knowledge in anatomy and physiology.

Be able to blood from patients in different ways.

Check patient details. Label samples correctly and clearly.

Adhere to infection control policy, including staff immunisation.

About us

St Thomas Medical Group is the 2nd largest practice in Devon, forward thinking, innovative who are looking for an enthusiastic, skilled Phlebotomist to help us diversify the workforce of our organisation. We have 3 sites across Exeter. St Thomas, Exwick and Exeter University.

We have 11 Partners, 17 Salaried GPs, 22 Nurses, 4 ANPs, 3 Paramedics, 2 social prescribers and First Contact Physios working across the group.

Job responsibilities
  • a.To develop, implement and embed health promotion and well-being programmes
  • b.To implement and evaluate individual treatment plans for chronic disease patients
  • c.To identify, manage and support patients at risk of developing long term conditions, preventing adverse effects to patients health
  • d.To provide routine nursing care to patients as required in accordance with clinical based evidence, NICE and the NSF
  • e.To provide wound care (ulcer/Doppler etc.) to patients
  • g.To request pathology services as necessary
  • h.To provide chronic disease clinics, delivering patient care as necessary, referring patients to secondary/specialist care as required
  • i.To maintain accurate clinical records in conjunction with extant legislation
  • j.To ensure read codes are used effectively
  • k.To maintain chronic disease registers
  • l.To chaperone patients where necessary
  • m.To assist GPs with minor surgery when required
  • n.To prioritise health issues and intervene appropriately
  • o.To support the team in dealing with clinical emergencies
  • p.To recognise, assess and refer patients presenting with mental health needs
  • q.To implement vaccination programmes for adults and children
  • r.To support patients in the use of their prescribed medicines or over the counter medicines (within own scope of practice)
  • s.To liaise with external services/agencies to ensure the patient is supported appropriately (vulnerable patients etc.)
  • t.To delegate clinical responsibilities appropriately (ensuring safe practice and the task is within the scope of practice of the individual)
  • u.To support the clinical team with all safeguarding matters in accordance with local and national policies
  • v.To deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate
  • w.Support junior members of the nursing team, providing guidance when necessary
  • x.Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
  • y.Support and participate in shared learning within the practice
  • z.Continually review clinical practices, responding to national policies and initiatives where appropriate
Person Specification Experience
  • Experience of working within a nursing team
  • Experience working with patients
  • Experience in a health care setting
  • Experience carrying out venepuncture
  • Experience working in primary care or general practice
  • Venepuncture certification.
  • Previous experience using clinical systems (e.g. EMIS/SystmOne), knowledge of QOF, and evidence of ongoing continuing professional development would be advantageous.
Qualifications
  • Experience of working in a primary care environment
