Clare County Council / Comhairle Contae an Chláir is the local government authority for County Clare, employing approximately 990 staff and managing an annual operating budget of €204 million in 2026. The Active Ennis Leisure Complex is an indoor health and fitness arena with white flag accreditation, offering pool and gym based activities including swim lessons.

Job Title

Lifeguard Instructor

Responsibilities
  • Safeguard pool users by maintaining constant observation of all swimmers while on duty.
  • Inspect all equipment, the pool, and surrounding areas at the start of duties to ensure cleanliness and safety.
  • Report any defects or hazards immediately to the supervising manager.
  • Enforce pool regulations, promote hygiene and safety among users.
  • Manage user behaviour and discourage conduct that could cause injury.
  • Teach swimming, lifesaving lessons, aquafit classes, running camps, and birthday parties (training will be provided).
  • Stand in for the Duty Manager when required and assist in operating pool equipment.
  • Provide first aid or resuscitation assistance and work to improve competency in this area.
  • Perform general hygiene duties around the pool area.
  • Carry out any other duties assigned by the line manager.
Qualifications
  • Good character and in good health.
  • Hold or be willing to complete a National Pool Lifeguard Award Level 2 (Water Safety Ireland), or an equivalent qualification with the commitment to complete Level 2 before employment.
  • Hold a Full Swim Teacher Award/Qualification or equivalent.
  • Hold an Assistant Swim Teacher Award and obtain a Full Swim Teacher Award within the first year probationary period.
  • Possess a current Certificate in Occupational First Aid or be able to obtain it before commencing employment.
  • Have sufficient educational standard to carry out duties efficiently.
Salary & Benefits

Salary: €794.06 - €815.62 per week, according to the public service pay scale (minimum of the scale).
Annual leave: 25 days per year.
Benefits include a medical examination, training programmes, retirement contributions in line with local government policy, and paid first aid training.

Working Hours
  • Post may require working a 39 hour week, including evenings and weekends as part of normal duties.
  • Sunday and public holiday working may be required, with pay in accordance with relevant legislation.
  • A roster may be in operation as determined by the Line Manager.
Age

Candidate must be under 70 years on the date of receipt of application unless a new entrant under applicable pension provisions (new entrants are exempt from the 70 year retirement limit). Citizens of the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, or qualified visa holders, may apply.
