We are looking for an enthusiastic Payroll Support Officer to help support the administration of the NHS Payroll team. You will be based within our busy Payroll Department, ensuring the delivery of a high quality service to our workforce and external organisations.
You will support the Payroll Team and Payroll Management, ensuring all processes within the department are adhered to in a timely and accurate manner. You will work closely with Pensions, Human Resources, and Expenses.
You will need strong numerical and communication skills, along with the ability to work methodically and pay close attention to detail. This is an interesting role and we are looking for a conscientious team player who will maintain our high standards and positive reputation.

Main duties of the jobThe post holder will support the day to day administration and maintenance of Payroll, Pensions and Expenses records to safeguard an accurate and timely data approval and flow, ensuring pay is accurate and timely. They will also provide accurate information on request to staff, managers and external agents.
They will be required to work independently and as part of a team.
Job responsibilities- Open and date stamp all incoming documents, ensuring each item has a valid assignment number and is approved by an authorised signatory in line with the Authorised Signatory List (ASL) requirements.
- Maintain accurate databases that record all incoming applications for parental leave and distribute these to the appropriate officer.
- Respond to and accurately carry out requests for earnings details from employees, managers and external agents, including mortgage providers, and provide statistical information to relevant parties.
- Monitor and maintain the electronic postbox for all amendments and terminations, ensuring they are distributed to the relevant officer, raising queries for missing details directly with line managers, informing team leaders about possible over /under payments, and proactively following up outstanding queries.
- Ensure all paperwork is appropriately filed.
- Assist the office with the input of data as instructed.
- Be the first contact for payroll queries from employees and managers, ensuring accurate and timely responses to routine and more complex queries relating to pay, using tact and sensitivity when staff or managers may be distressed or unfamiliar with pay processes or national terms and conditions of pay.
- Provide excellent customer service when answering incoming telephone calls dealing with enquiries or forwarding them to the relevant section.
- Provide general reception service for the Payroll department.
- Understand and decipher all alterations to E Roster payments that need to be amended, input and check the claims in an accurate and timely manner.
- Adhere to policies and propose changes to working practices and procedures within the Payroll Support department, with the ability to deal with non routine queries and a range of procedures and practices across Payroll as a whole.
- Assist and check elements on all new starters entered onto ESR by payroll officers for accuracy.
- Manage voluntary deductions (e.g., healthcare plans, union subscriptions), ensuring appropriate authority is present and correspond with external agencies accordingly.
- Create and input assignment sets within ESR for the production of payslips for absentees and terminated employees.
