Are you an enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 or Band 6 Dietitian, wanting to further develop your career in paediatric dietetics? This post offers a fantastic opportunity to join our friendly and dynamic team of Dietitians.

Our team of experienced paediatric dietitians work closely alongside excellent multidisciplinary team members including paediatricians, paediatric specialist nurses and other healthcare professionals. The team provides both inpatient and outpatient services with a varied and interesting caseload including: Allergy, Cystic Fibrosis, Nutrition Support, Diabetes and Neonatal nutrition.

The post holder will provide care to children on our wards and in outpatient clinics. They will also support the specialist Paediatric Diabetes Dietitian in providing care to children and young people with diabetes. The successful applicant will be a good team player who is able to work flexibly with some non-standard hours to meet the needs of our service.

The JD & PS are currently under AfC review and are subject to change.

Main duties of the job

We have an excellent staff supervision and appraisal system which supports the development of individuals and their services. We take student Dietitians on Placements and you will have an active role in their training and the supervision of other colleagues.

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Job responsibilities

• To be professional and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients/clients in your care.
• To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients/clients under your care, and support more junior staff to do likewise.
• To undertake a comprehensive assessment of patients/clients including those with diverse or complex presentations/multi pathologies; use specialist clinical reasoning skills and appropriate assessment techniques to provide an accurate diagnosis of their condition
• Formulate and deliver an individual treatment programme using assessment, reasoning skills and treatment skills based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options. Formulate an initial diagnosis and prognoses in order to recommend best course of intervention and develop comprehensive discharge plans
• To take delegated responsibility from the Band 7 clinician for managing patients/clients with particular conditions and be responsible for providing specialist assessment and treatment plans for patients with these conditions.
• Evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter treatment programmes as required
• To have the ability to undertake self-directed/lone working in a variety of locations

Person Specification Qualifications

• Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics
• HCPC registration
• Accredited BDA Course in specialist area
• Specific Training in Diabetes i.e. University study in paediatric diabetes (or having worked in paediatric diabetes since prior to 2010)

Experience

• Ability to demonstrate a good level of knowledge and skills in paediatric and/or paediatric diabetes dietetics
• Awareness of own strengths and limitations
• Able to work under supervision and as part of a team
• Evidence of effective working within an MDT
• Demonstrate experience of problem solving approaches
• Audit and research in a clinical area
• Demonstrates continuous Professional Development

Skills

• Ability to prioritise and work to deadlines
• Ability to communicate effectively in a variety of settings within children's health and social care services.
• Accurate record keeping, report writing and IT skills
• Have a flexible approach to working with good time management
• Teaching and presentation skills to a variety of audience's Inc. children and young people, parents and families, school staff and health care professionals.

Other

• Ability to travel both sites via own car or assisted driver.
• Interest and awareness of developments in paediatric diabetes care
• Member of the BDA
• Member of Specialist Interest Group
