Out of Hours Veterinary Surgeon
Posted 20 hours 17 minutes ago by Pennard Vets
Salary: £70,000 - £75,000 per annum (depending on experience)
Permanent
Working Hours: 9-on, 19-off Rota
Location: Sevenoaks, TN13
Closing Date: 31 March 2026
At Pennard Vets, we know that emergency and out-of-hours care isn't just about medicine - it's about people. It's about being there when someone is worried, frightened, or facing a difficult decision about a much-loved pet. We're looking for a Veterinary Surgeon who understands that balance: clinical confidence paired with genuine compassion.
This role sits within our dedicated night and weekend team, where trust, teamwork and communication really matter. You'll work alongside experienced nurses and supportive colleagues who value collaboration, while also having the autonomy to lead your cases and make confident clinical decisions. We trust our vets to use their judgement and practise good medicine, and we believe the best care happens when people feel supported and respected.
Although the role offers real clinical independence, you'll never feel alone - you'll be working with an experienced nursing team and supported by approachable clinicians who are always willing to share advice and expertise.
You'll see a genuinely varied emergency caseload, from urgent medical presentations through to surgical interventions, giving you the opportunity to use and develop your full clinical skillset. What remains constant is our commitment to high standards of patient care and honest, compassionate communication with clients - particularly during what can be very emotional moments for pet owners.
Continuity of care is important to us. Clear clinical documentation and thoughtful handovers ensure our daytime teams can seamlessly continue each patient's journey. Just as importantly, we work hard to maintain a positive and supportive working environment where colleagues feel valued and listened to. We're proud of the approachable, collaborative team we've built, and we care just as much about looking after each other as we do about the animals we treat.
This position has become available as our current out-of-hours vet is moving on to pursue a specialist pathway with South East Veterinary Referrals (SEVR). We're genuinely proud to support colleagues as they develop their interests and progress in their careers, and this role offers a great opportunity to learn from and work alongside referral clinicians as part of that journey.
You'll be an MRCVS-qualified Veterinary Surgeon, confident in first-opinion practice and comfortable managing cases independently. Strong clinical reasoning is essential, but so is emotional intelligence. This role suits someone resilient yet kind, decisive yet approachable - someone who understands that veterinary medicine is as much about people as it is about animals.
The 9-on, 19-off rota offers genuine balance: focused clinical time followed by extended time to rest, recharge and enjoy life outside of practice.
If this sounds like the kind of role where you could do your best work, we'd really enjoy hearing from you.
Please send your CV and a short note about yourself to .
Even if you're not sure you meet every part of the role, we'd still encourage you to get in touch - we're always happy to have an informal conversation.
