Occupational Therapist (Acute inpatients) - Respiratory Medicine/ICU - West Middlesex University Hospital

The post holder will be based with the inpatient respiratory medicine team at West Middlesex Hospital, covering inpatient medical and surgical wards across the hospital.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop advanced assessment and intervention skills, support multi disciplinary working, provide leadership to the therapy team and supervise junior staff and students.
  • Implement individual and group interventions using graded activities to achieve therapeutic goals and optimise clients' functional independence.
  • Carry out risk assessments, plan and conduct home assessments, discharge to assist visits, and ensure clients' safety and health during all stages.
  • Monitor, evaluate and modify interventions to measure client progress and treatment effectiveness.
  • Supervise Band 5 occupational therapists, therapy assistants, and students, and represent the OT department in MDT meetings and ward rounds.
  • liaise with families, agencies, and statutory bodies to contribute to care planning and coordination.
  • Provide equipment education and authorise equipment spend up to £500 per client.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and activity records in line with Trust and College of Occupational Therapists guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with College of Occupational Therapists Code of Ethics, professional conduct, and all relevant national and local policies.
  • Participate in a 7 day rota of flexible working and undertake at least one weekend shift every four weekends.

Professional development and organisational duties include:

  • Review and reflect on practice and engage in regular clinical and professional supervision and appraisal.
  • Contribute to in service education, supervision, and CPD activities, and maintain a professional portfolio for CPD.
  • Plan and deliver induction, education programmes, and support OT students throughout clinical placements.
  • Support service audit, research, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Deputise for the Band 7 OT in their absence and lead designated projects.
  • Adopt good time management and punctuality and show commitment to the Trust's business and clinical governance plans.
  • Apply national guidelines and health legislation including NICE guidelines, NSFs and health and safety policies.

Person Specification

Qualifications
  • Degree in OT or equivalent
  • HCPC registration
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD
  • RCOT registration
  • Member of relevant clinical interest groups
Experience
  • Experience working in acute or rehabilitation settings
  • Physical health experience in NHS
  • Documented evidence of continued professional development
  • Community experience
  • Mental health experience
  • Experience supervising/mentoring students
  • Experience supervising junior staff
Skills and Knowledge
  • Understanding current best practice and guidelines
  • Application of OT processes to patients needing acute rehabilitation
  • Knowledge of national guidelines and health legislation (e.g. NICE, NSFs)

Pay: £45,953 to £54,254 per annum, inclusive of HCAS (pro rata).
