Job Description
Overview

Provide appropriate day to day managerial leadership in absence of Ward Manager. To provide exemplary planned care for patients, ensuring the team which includes clinical and non-clinical personnel provide the highest standards of care, safety and service to patients, relatives and other customers such as Consultants, using a philosophy of care endorsed within the hospital which will be underpinned by policy, procedures, protocols, business strategies and imperatives.

Main duties of the job

Provide appropriate day to day managerial leadership in absence of Ward Manager. To provide exemplary planned care for patients, ensuring the team which includes clinical and non-clinical personnel provide the highest standards of care, safety and service to patients, relatives and other customers such Consultants, using a philosophy of care endorsed within the hospital which will be underpinned by policy, procedures, protocols, business strategies and imperatives. To assist the Ward Manager to deliver effective clinical leadership ensuring the highest standards of nursing care are consistently provided to all patients attending the clinical setting, deputising as required. Assess patients' health and wellbeing across a complex and changing caseload to assist in the delivery of care to meet individuals' health and wellbeing needs. Provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information. Develop own knowledge and skills and that of others, actively coaching and mentoring others to constantly improve and strive to exceed patient and customer expectations. Promote best practice in health and safety and security. Promote people's equality, diversity and rights. Acknowledge the risk of Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAI) and understand own responsibility as agreed with line manager in the prevention and control of HCAI. To maintain standards of infection control within the hospital and own department and to assist patients to maintain their own infection control needs.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • To provide advice, guidance and support more junior employees by maintaining professional standards to ensure the delivery of high quality care and contribute to quality improvement.
  • To meet Spire values, whilst delivering care to patients and all customer groups.
  • To adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct and Spire Policies, Procedures, Protocols and Standards at all times.
  • To ensure that all Company and Regulatory policies and practices are maintained and demonstrated within daily practice, taking action to address and escalate where necessary to ensure clinical, regulatory and Company policy compliance.
  • Provide and receive patient information, ensuring that all patient information is provided, received and recorded in accordance with the Data Protection Act and Spire Policies.
  • Carry out any other duty that reasonably falls within the general nature and level of responsibility of the post.
  • To participate in Nurse in Charge responsibilities.
  • To participate in the ward on-call rota.

Who we're looking for:

  • Registered Nurse with NMC registration
  • Previous nursing experience with demonstrable experience of leading others
  • Working towards a post registration qualification in a clinical specialism
  • Mentorship qualification
  • Previous experience in a surgical environment
  • Previous management / supervisory experience
  • Experience of preceptorship / mentorship
  • Competence across a range of nursing skills supported by professional and clinical knowledge
  • Possess the mandatory training requirements for role including infection control and health and safety competencies
  • Basic workload / shift management
  • Able to demonstrate the principles of accountable practice
  • Knowledge of appropriate standards and external bodies, such as the Care Quality Commission
  • Knowledge of quality assurance tools
