The Role

We are inviting experienced Nurse Practitioners (Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, and Emergency Nurse Practitioners) with Medico-Legal experience to join our expanding panel of expert clinicians, supporting clinical negligence screening and advisory work across a high-volume, ongoing Medico-Legal contract.

This role focuses on the structured review and analysis of medical records relating to advanced clinical decision-making, including assessment, diagnosis, prescribing, referral, and escalation of care. The work supports solicitors and instructing parties in determining whether care met acceptable professional standards and whether any failings contributed to patient harm.

Engagement is offered on a case-by-case basis, providing flexibility alongside substantive clinical roles or other professional commitments. This opportunity is particularly suited to Nurse Practitioners with strong analytical skills, autonomous practice experience, and formal Medico-Legal training.

Typical Work
  • Medical record screening and detailed analysis of advanced clinical practice encounters

  • Preparation of chronologies and pagination

  • Commentary on assessment, diagnosis, management plans, and prognosis (within scope of advanced nursing practice)

  • Breach of duty and causation support, often alongside medical expert witnesses

  • Responding to focused questions from the instructing party within structured Medico-Legal instructions

Typical Cases
  • Delayed or missed diagnosis in primary care, urgent care, or emergency settings

  • Inappropriate prescribing or medication management errors

  • Failure to refer, escalate, or safety-net appropriately

  • Inadequate assessment or documentation in autonomous practice

  • Management of deteriorating patients, including sepsis recognition failures

  • Out-of-hours, walk-in centre, GP surgery, and emergency department presentations

  • Start Date: Immediate onboarding available

  • Contract Type: Ongoing, flexible case-by-case engagement

  • Workload: Variable, dependent on panel capacity and availability

  • Location: Fully remote

  • Schedule: Self-managed, with reports completed within agreed timeframes (typically 1-2 weeks from instruction)

  • Engagement Model: Structured Medico-Legal report-based work, suitable for experienced Nurse Practitioners undertaking focused assignments

Key Responsibilities
  • Review medical records, consultation notes, prescribing records, and letters of instruction relating to potential clinical negligence claims

  • Produce clear, impartial, and evidence-based screening or advisory reports

  • Address breach of duty and causation issues relating to advanced clinical decision-making

  • Ensure reports are well-structured, concise, and aligned with Medico-Legal standards

  • Meet agreed turnaround times for each instruction

  • Maintain objectivity, independence, and professional integrity at all times

  • Work collaboratively with ProMedical's Medico-Legal team and, where required, alongside medical expert witnesses

Key Requirements
  • Professional Registration: Active NMC registration as a Registered Nurse with annotation or recognition as an Advanced / Nurse Practitioner (ANP, ACP, or ENP)

  • Clinical Experience: Significant post-registration experience working autonomously in advanced clinical practice roles within NHS or equivalent settings

  • Medico-Legal Experience: Demonstrable experience producing Medico-Legal screening reports, chronologies, or advisory opinions

  • Training: Completion of recognised Medico-Legal or Expert Witness training (e.g. Bond Solon, Expert Witness Institute, or equivalent) is required

  • Scope of Practice: Evidence of autonomous assessment, diagnosis, prescribing, and referral authority relevant to role

  • Report Writing Skills: Strong written English with the ability to analyse complex clinical decision-making and present balanced, defensible opinions
