Job Description
Overview

Element Materials Technologies seeks to recruit an experienced Mechanical Engineer interested in material testing and characterization, with a particular focus on hydrogen environments. As a member of the operations team in our Hitchin laboratory, the Mechanical Engineer will perform and develop a variety of routine and non-routine testing, analysis, and technical investigation assignments. The engineer must be proficient in core technical and business skills, including fundamentals of mechanical engineering and compliance with safety rules, code of conduct, and company policies. This is a hands-on role involving laboratory testing of both large components and small samples, customer interaction, and project management including technical report writing.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical and engineering leadership, supporting the development of new testing technologies within the laboratory.
  • Participate in the design, manufacturing, and installation of lab equipment and instrumentation.
  • Assist in the installation and commissioning of new projects.
  • Maintain and repair installed equipment and instrumentation.
  • Support the professional development of technicians and engineers.
  • Set up and operate test machines for mechanical testing according to standards (e.g., ASTM, ISO).
  • Configure gaseous/liquid environments at pressure and temperature for in-situ testing.
  • Process and analyze test data, and prepare technical reports.
  • Ensure safety practices are followed at all times.
  • Plan and schedule testing activities.
  • Prepare project documentation, adhere to schedules, quality standards, and H&S procedures, and conduct engineering reviews.
  • Support the development and documentation of SOPs.
Skills / Qualifications
  • Hold an MSc or higher in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering, with at least two years of relevant work experience. BSc applicants require a minimum of five years of proven experience.
  • Knowledge of test machines, drives, and control technology.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD systems, including SolidWorks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong analytical and computer skills.
  • Ability to apply academic knowledge within the context of Element's business.
  • In-depth understanding of testing machines is a plus.
  • Flexible and capable of multitasking across multiple projects.
