Ailsa Craig Medical Practice is seeking an enthusiastic and committed Locum GP to join our friendly and supportive team to cover maternity leave for 12 months from August 2026.

6 sessions per week: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Includes 1 day on call per week.

We are a well established GP practice in Central Manchester serving a patient population of approximately 11,100 patients and operating a total triage model.

Job summary

Main Duties of the Job

In accordance with the practice timetable, the post-holder will undertake a variety of duties including clinical patient triage, surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, visiting patients at home, checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries, paperwork, referrals and correspondence in a timely manner.

Making professional autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation. Assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems. Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness.

In consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols, developing care plans for health. Providing counselling and health education.

Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards.

Compiling and issuing computer generated acute and repeat prescriptions.

Prescribing in accordance with the practice prescribing formulary (or generically) whenever clinically appropriate. The post-holder will be expected to undertake all normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care.

Job responsibilities

We are seeking a GP to join the practice for long term locum maternity cover for a period of 12 months, working 6 sessions per week - Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The role will involve providing routine GP duties including both telephone and face to face consultations for acute and routine appointments. All patient requests are triaged by a duty GP prior to booking, ensuring that only appropriate and relevant cases are scheduled into your clinic. Appointments are scheduled in 15 minute slots, with 12 appointments per session.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing acute, chronic, and complex conditions in line with GMC and NICE guidance. Duties will also include reviewing test results, hospital correspondence, prescriptions, and clinical tasks, as well as maintaining accurate clinical records of all consultations using EMIS Web.

You will work collaboratively with our clinical and administrative teams to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and responsive care. The role also involves supporting continuity of care, safeguarding responsibilities, and maintaining high clinical standards.

The GP will be supported by a strong multidisciplinary team, including experienced nursing staff, pharmacists, and admin.

Person Specification Essential Experience
  • Evidence of valid medical indemnity and right to work in the UK.
  • Experience in primary care managing a range of acute and chronic conditions.
  • Excellent clinical, diagnostic, and communication skills.
  • Confident in using IT systems and electronic health records.
  • Commitment to safe, evidence based, and equitable patient care.
Desirable Experience
  • Experience using EMIS Web, Docman and Accurx.
Essential Qualifications
  • GMC registration and inclusion on the National GP Performers List
