Are you a hands-on tradesperson looking for a stable maintenance role?


A leading University in Belfast is looking for a hard-working and practical Maintenance Assistant to join its busy Estates and Facilities team.This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a building trade background who wants to develop their career in maintenance. If you're an ex-bricklayer, plasterer, general builder, labourer or time-served tradesperson with good practical skills and a willingness to learn, we'd like to hear from you.

What You'll Be Doing


Working alongside experienced building, electrical and plumbing tradespeople, you'll help keep the University's buildings, plant and external areas safe, functional and well maintained.

Your day-to-day work could include:

  • General building maintenance, including plastering, tiling, painting and repairs.
  • Assisting with plumbing, electrical and general maintenance tasks.
  • Changing lamps, filters, tap washers, lock cylinders and other components.
  • Unblocking sinks, toilets, urinals and associated pipework.
  • Cleaning and maintaining plant areas, ventilation grilles, gutters and external areas.
  • Power washing, removing graffiti and posters, and clearing rubbish.
  • Assisting with boilers, pumps, generators, ventilation and other building services.
  • Carrying out planned maintenance and responding to reactive repairs and breakdowns.
  • Moving materials, tools and equipment around the University estate.
  • Supporting contractors when required.
  • Using tablets/PDA devices and the University's maintenance management system following training.
  • Completing basic maintenance and health & safety records.
  • Drive university vehicles when required.


No two days will be exactly the same, making this a great role for someone who enjoys practical work and being part of a busy maintenance team.


What We're Looking For


We're looking for someone who is reliable, hardworking and takes pride in doing a good job.

You should have:

  • A relevant trade qualification such as NVQ Level 2, or be time-served in a skilled trade.
  • Practical experience in building, construction or maintenance.
  • A background as a bricklayer, plasterer, builder, joiner, plumber or similar trade would be highly beneficial.
  • A good understanding of health and safety.
  • The ability to follow instructions and work to deadlines.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
  • The ability to work independently and use your own initiative.
  • Basic IT skills and a willingness to learn new systems.
  • A full, valid UK driving licence.
  • Willingness to work out of hours and participate in an on-call rota, where required.
  • Willingness to carry a work phone and iPad when required.
  • A valid CSR card.
