Locum Paediatric Haem-Onc Clinical Fellow (mat cover)

1. JOB TITLE: Locum Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Haematology/Oncology

2. GRADE: Locum Clinical Fellow (ST4+)

3. ACTIVITY: 40 hours/week, no on-call commitments

4. DEPARTMENT: Children's Services

5. ACCOUNTABLE TO: Clinical Lead/Director

6. PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES: To join the existing members of the Paediatric Haematology/Oncology team in providing a regional service for children with cancer and haematological disorders.

The post holder's duties will be primarily at the Children's Hospital Oxford (CHOX), located in the John Radcliffe (JR) Hospital, but it is a condition of the appointment that the post holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations and outreach clinics. The post is also suited to someone with haematology experience (adult or paediatric) to develop their skills in paediatric haematology and oncology.

Main duties of the job

Main duties of Clinical Fellow:

Clinical:

The successful candidate will work at Higher Specialty Trainee level and will be actively involved in the management of all patients aged 0-19 years, with a wide variety of solid and CNS tumours, malignant and non-malignant haematological conditions. Duties will include inpatient management, on-treatment and follow-up clinics on the oncology day ward and managing a twice weekly procedures general anaesthetic session including performing bone marrow aspirations and trephines, and lumbar punctures with the administration of intrathecal chemotherapy.

The postholder will liaise with doctors and community nurses based in Oxfordshire and at the shared care units in the Thames Valley Cancer Alliance (TVCA). He/she will also be expected to develop the skills to prescribe chemotherapy (after appropriate training), attend various multi-disciplinary team meetings and organise procedures and investigations for patients.

Job responsibilities

An indicative timetable and job plan is outlined below. The final job plan for the post will be agreed with the clinical lead upon appointment and will be subject to review.

Summary of main duties:

  • Participate in management of inpatients
  • Organisation of investigations and follow-up test results
  • After appropriate training:
    • Perform bone marrow aspirates and trephines, and lumbar punctures with intrathecal chemotherapy

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full GMC registration and licence to practise
  • Right to work in UK
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCPCH/MRCP or equivalent Part 1 and 2
  • Higher medical degree
  • MRCPath
Training
  • Appropriate training in paediatrics, paediatric oncology, paediatric haematology, medical oncology, or adult haematology
  • APLS or equivalent course in date
  • Trained to Level 3 safeguarding
  • For Adult Haematology/Medical Oncology applicants: Previous postgraduate experience in paediatrics
Experience
  • Comprehensive experience and training in paediatric care or adult haematology
  • Evidence of ability to manage complex clinical problems with appropriate support
  • Comprehensive experience and training in paediatric malignant and benign haematology and paediatric oncology at tertiary level
  • Laboratory training in haematology
  • Experience in management of haemophilia
Skills and Knowledge
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Evidence of work behaviour that demonstrates OUH NHS foundation Trust values of compassionate excellence
  • Effective administrative and time management skills
  • Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
