University College London Hospitals is seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant in Pain Medicine, working in the Pain Management Centre at the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery. This post is required to cover clinical activity this year as well as ensuring a consultant led service at all times. Main duties of the jobThe Pain Management Centre comprises 15 consultants with a full multidisciplinary team. It is housed in a new purpose designed facility and is a nationally recognised centre of excellence. There are unique opportunities to work with patients who experience persistent abdominal and pelvic pain, complex neuropathic pain, cancer related pain, facial pain and inpatients with complex medical needs. We also have an active neuromodulation service. The hospital is committed to excellence in clinical care, teaching and training and in research.

Person Specification Knowledge and Qualifications- Full GMC Registration. NB: Non UK trained doctors must be on the GMC register by date of appointment.
- On GMC Specialist Register for anaesthesia or within 3 months of attainment of CCT in anaesthesia at date of interview
- FRCA or equivalent anaesthetic experience.
- FFPMRCA or equivalent
- Higher Degree
- Completed a recognised period of training leading to a CCT in anaesthesia or has gained equivalent experience
- Completed a recognised period of training and experience in Pain Medicine equivalent to what we would expect for Royal College of Anaesthetists for Advanced Pain Training
- Experience in managing patients within an MDT chronic pain service
- Completed recognised period of training in a specialist pain clinic setting approved by the Royal College of Anaesthetists for Advanced Pain Training or equivalent
- Have worked within the context of an interdisciplinary / multispeciality team where the candidate has been able to obtain significant experience in the management of patients with complex pain problems
- Evidence of commitment to service improvement/ clinical excellence
- Demonstrate an ability to perform the specific clinical procedures relevant to post including clinical risk
- Can demonstrate that they have the skills to work within an interdisciplinary / multispecialty pain management service
- Understanding of clinical risk management
- Clear, logical thinking showing an analytical/scientific approach
- Demonstrate an ability to identify and organise the specific clinical investigations, perform specific clinical procedures, drug manipulations, clinical advice and onward referrals relevant to the post
- Appropriate level of clinical knowledge for the post
- Shows knowledge of evidence informed practice
- Shows awareness of own limitations
- Demonstrates breadth of awareness of issues relating to clinical anaesthesia
- Understanding / knowledge of Research ethics
- Evidence of research activity & publications

- Published in field of pain medicine and/or anaesthesia in high impact peer review journals
- Evidence of working with patients / public to deliver research or improve services
- Higher taught (e.g. MSc) or research (e.g. MD or PhD) degree
- Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English
- Evidence of leadership skills
- Ability to build rapport, listens, persuade/ negotiate.
- Ability to work as part of a pain team and to develop such teams.
- Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and exert appropriate authority
- See patients as people, ability to empathise and work co operatively with others
- Ambition to develop and improve own professional standards
- Commitment to developing and improving services and departments
- Ability to use a non judgemental approach to patient s and colleagues regardless of their sexuality, ethnicity, disability, religious beliefs or financial status

- Management course completed or evidence of knowledge of management structures & processes IT skills

- Evidence of having been involved in development of a Pain Management Service
