Locum Consultant in Neuro-Ophthalmology

As a consultant ophthalmologist you will be running a specialist weekly clinic seeing both outpatients and ward patients referred with a wide range of neuro-ophthalmic conditions.

Main duties of the job

Your duties will include:

1. To run an outpatient clinic as per timetable.
2. To be available during normal office hours for consultations with neurosurgical and neurology staff relating to inpatients in the hospital and to facilitate inpatient consultations on request.
3. To undertake peri-ocular botulinum injections as indicated.
4. To review data collected by ophthalmic technicians for the hydroxychloroquine retinal screening service.
5. To participate in the fortnightly departmental MDT (Thursdays 1-2pm).
6. To actively contribute to the research, teaching and clinical governance activities of the department.

Person Specification Clinical Experience

• Wide experience in clinical ophthalmology.
• Experience of the management of patients with Neuro-Ophthalmology (at least 2 years).
• An excellent communicator with colleagues, other staff and patients, a team player, high ethical standards, a willingness and ability actively to listen to others, mature, balanced and reasonable, assertive.
• Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team and understanding of the different roles.
• Experience of research, teaching and clinical governance activities of the department.
• An understanding of patient centred care and self-care approach.

Skills and Abilities

• Experience in managing clinic workflow.
• An interest in the management of Neuro-Ophthalmology conditions and Botox.
• Management of associated comorbidities.

Communication

• Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service.
• Ability to organise and manage specialist service including outpatient referrals.
• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Caring attitude to patients.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, nurses, GPs and other agencies.

Personal and People Development

• Knowledge of principles of clinical governance and staff appraisal. A demonstrable interest in research.
• Experience and interest in teaching. Supervising doctors in training.

Knowledge and Qualifications

• oMRCP, FRCOphth or equivalent
• oCCT in Neurology or Ophthalmology, or Medical Ophthalmology or equivalent.
• oFull GMC Registration with a Licence to Practise. NB: Non-UK trained doctors must be on the GMC register by date of appointment.
• oBe on or eligible for the GMC specialist register or be within 6 months of entry. NB: For non-UK trained doctors must be on the GMC Specialist Register by date of appointment.
• oHigher Degree (e.g., MD, DM or PhD).
