We are seeking to appoint a Consultant Gastroenterologist as part of departmental expansion and continued development of specialised services, and to help support more efficient outpatient service delivery and reduce diagnostic backlogs. This post is 1 of 3 new posts in the department and represents an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and growing department practicing from a state-of-the-art University hospital. The successful candidates will be expected to have or develop a sub-specialty interest in Nutrition/IF, IBD, or Endoscopy to complement the existing team, and to share their expertise in supporting and developing a forward-thinking service. In particular, we are looking for a consultant with an interest in nutrition/IF to help support delivery of SIF services as part of recent specialised commissioning.

Main duties of the job
- To appoint 1 Locum Consultant Gastroenterologist as part of departmental expansion and continued development of specialised services, and to help support more efficient outpatient service delivery and reduce diagnostic backlogs. This post is part of an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and growing department practicing from a state-of-the-art University hospital. The successful candidate will be expected to have or develop a sub-specialty interest in Nutrition/IF, IBD, or Endoscopy to complement existing team, and to share their expertise in supporting and developing a forward-thinking service. In particular, we are looking for a consultant with an interest in nutrition/IF to help support delivery of SIF services as part of recent specialised commissioning.
- Provide a comprehensive Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endoscopy, and Nutrition service to patients in Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond, ensuring waiting lists and waiting times are adhered to, delivering services efficiently, and maintaining risk management and clinical governance at all times.
- Experience in a wide range of gastroenterological conditions and collaboration with colleagues to deliver the service in the Trust. See 3 new patients and 8 follow-up patients in each outpatient clinic (or 8NPs if a virtual/2WW clinic).
- Undertake unselected endoscopy lists booked to a standard template (currently 8-10 points per list due to COVID restrictions; expected to increase to 10-12 depending upon infection control and staffing).
- Take responsibility for patients under their care.
- Provide a consultation service and advisory service to other clinical colleagues within the Trust and Primary Care.
- Participate in the development of the gastroenterology service, treatment protocols and guidelines and the greater knowledge in the management of gastroenterology conditions.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
- Participate in the gastroenterology on-call rota (Consultant A 1:17; Consultant B 1:19) and the GI Bleed rota (1:19) to ensure appropriate emergency services outside normal working hours. There is no general medical on-call.
- Participate in education and training of medical students, trainee doctors, nurses, and allied health care personnel as appropriate. Interest and experience in undergraduate teaching is essential, including pre-clinical and clinical students from WMS.
- Take responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors within the specialty, including appraisal of F2s and SpRs, and Certificates of Satisfaction for F1s.
- Demonstrate involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit, including development and maintenance of systems to ensure continued safe clinical practice, and regular attendance at the Gastro QIPS meeting.
- Ensure own practice is up to date, including responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development and participation in the Trust's Performance and Annual Review system.
- Share responsibility for data protection arising from the use of computers.
- Comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.
