About the RroleIn a world of increasing volatility and uncertainty, understanding future health and mortality trends has never been more essential. Are you curious, motivated, and eager to deepen your understanding of the medical, healthcare, societal, lifestyle and technological factors shaping the long term future of the global insurance industry? As a Life & Health R&D Intern, you will support investigations across a wide range of topics, from health forecasting and mortality research to cancer and cardiovascular trends, metabolic health, and emerging medical developments. New topics, such as exploring artificial intelligence in transforming diagnosis, risk assessment, clinical decision making and population health outcomes, are at the forefront of our minds. Previous intern projects have included GLP 1 anti obesity medications, mental health mortality, multi cancer early detection, new Alzheimer's disease medications, COVID 19 developments and many more. This 10 week paid position, based in London, starts 22nd June 2026.
Responsibilities- Conduct research and data analysis on health forecasting, mortality trends, and emerging medical developments.
- Interpret results and assist in communicating findings to internal and external audiences.
- Draft text for publications, presentations, and produce graphics, graphs, and visualisations.
- Collaborate with the Life Research and Forecasting team and external partners to support ongoing projects.
The Life Research and Forecasting team at Swiss Re is an international multidisciplinary research group across Europe and Asia, comprising five post PhD scientists and led by an experienced pricing actuary. We consult on core trends in medicine, life sciences and healthcare as they relate to mortality and morbidity insurance, analyse structured and unstructured datasets worldwide, and establish effective partnerships with universities, data providers and research organisations.
About You- You must be in the process of completing or hold an advanced degree (PhD, MSc, MPH, medical qualification), or equivalent degree - undergraduate students are not eligible.
- Your studies will be in the life/medical sciences, biomedical research, epidemiology or medical statistics, or similar. Actuarial, finance or business students are not eligible.
- You are a confident communicator with excellent oral and written English and presentation skills. Substantial written communication and presentation development experience is a plus - both academic publications and/or commercial science.
- You have already gained some experience or understanding of the medical, societal and lifestyle drivers that impact morbidity/mortality, which would be highly preferable.
- You have excellent qualitative and quantitative analytical skills, including Excel (Python, R etc are a plus).
- You are comfortable working in a team and independently, with experience in managing, prioritising and time management of multiple tasks.
