The Governing Body of St Catharine's College invites applications for election to a Junior Research Fellowship tenable from 1 October 2027 for three years.

The Fellowship is open to those who are engaged in research in any aspect of:

Anglo-Saxon Norse and Celtic, Archaeology, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, Economics, English, Geography, Human Social and Political Sciences, Law, Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics, Music, Theology and Religious Studies.

This Fellowship is intended to support those at an early stage in their academic careers, and will normally be awarded to candidates who have recently completed their PhD research, or are close to completion. Candidates should not have been engaged in full-time post-doctoral research for more than one year, nor have already held a College Research Fellowship elsewhere.

A Junior Research Fellow may undertake up to a maximum of six hours of undergraduate teaching per week during term, which will be remunerated separately, but will not be permitted to undertake paid work or to hold any other appointment, award or emolument, without the consent of the Governing Body. Research Fellows are normally expected to spend the tenure of their Fellowship in Cambridge and to contribute to the life of the College, but permission may be granted for periods of research away from Cambridge. Any candidate who does not have an automatic right to work in the United Kingdom will be themselves responsible for obtaining the necessary visa (although the College can give informal advice and assistance). The College will itself cover the cost of the visa and the associated healthcare surcharge.

Stipendiary Early Career Research Fellows will receive a stipend at point 31 on the university scale of stipends, if post submission of PhD. Before submission of PhD the stipend will be set at Point 27 of the University scale. As of 1 August 2025 Point 31 of the University scale is £29,497 and Point 27 is £26,745 p.a. The stipend will include the annual uplift set in August 2026, which has not yet been published, and is pensionable. Accommodation will be offered if available and a dining allowance is included. In the absence of available accommodation, a living out allowance will be provided.
