Birmingham City University is seeking an experienced IT Project Manager to lead the delivery of IT and Estates-related projects supporting our ambitious infrastructure modernisation and digital transformation strategy.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering complex infrastructure initiatives across a diverse and dynamic university environment.
You will be responsible for planning, coordinating and delivering infrastructure-focused projects that involve Estates, operational customers (including academic and professional service departments), IT suppliers, infrastructure engineers and IT support teams. Working closely with senior stakeholders, you will define robust project plans and develop practical solutions to ensure projects deliver agreed business outcomes - on time, within budget and to defined quality standards.
You will collaborate with other project leads and IT Services managers to ensure risks, interdependencies and competing priorities across concurrent major initiatives are effectively managed. A strong understanding of infrastructure delivery is essential, enabling you to provide subject matter insight into technical risks, dependencies, capacity constraints and operational impacts.
The role is responsible for developing and maintaining clear short-, medium- and long-term project plans to ensure structured and effective delivery. You will schedule, monitor and report on project activity, ensuring that each stage contributes to successful overall outcomes. A key aspect of the role involves identifying and proactively managing risks, issues, costs, dependencies and business impacts throughout the project lifecycle. You will initiate and coordinate required works with internal teams and external suppliers, ensuring delivery remains on track, recommending corrective action where necessary, and providing clear and timely project status reporting. In addition, you will work strategically with Estates to ensure aligned planning and coherent delivery, while engaging customers and stakeholders to define requirements clearly and manage expectations effectively
Candidates must demonstrate substantial experience delivering infrastructure-related projects within complex environments, including areas such as Infrastructure, Networks, Voice and Audio Visual technologies. You will bring excellent stakeholder management and relationship-building skills, supported by strong project management knowledge and proven practical delivery experience. Clear, confident and concise communication skills - both written and verbal - are essential, alongside the ability to balance customer requirements with technical and operational capacity constraints. A proven track record of effectively managing risks, dependencies and competing priorities is required. A PRINCE2 Practitioner qualification is desirable.
You will be required to work on site two days per week, typically Mondays and Wednesdays. However, due to your responsibility for overseeing infrastructure works associated with estates moves, there will be occasions when you are expected to be on site up to five days per week as needed.
The appointed candidate will normally be employed through our subsidiary company BCU Support Services Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Birmingham City University. Appointees with prior LGPS membership who wish to enter the LGPS scheme will be able to do so and will be employed by Birmingham City University directly.
