Job Summary

Our technology team sits at the heart of the organisation, ensuring that internal and external users benefit from the most efficient and user-friendly applications and services.

As Senior Developer within the IT Application Delivery and Support Teams you will be responsible for the provision of technical leadership, design and development of coding solutions to support Project and Support initiatives across the business. You will be required to help lead the work of project & support teams and work closely with business stakeholders and analysts to provide valuable technical insight and expertise into solution design of complex problems, working to best practices to ensure robust outcomes.

The role will require you to be a strong team player, comfortable in application development/support needs with experience in technically leading teams through delivery of large/complex solution delivery.In addition, you will serve as a source of technical knowledge for other developers and the wider IT Application teams, conducting code reviews and supporting production implementations.

The role will allow you to be involved in many development projects within the business across both Business as Usual and Project workstreams, including the provision of Tier 3 application support to the business. In addition, there is an expectation that you will support the development of the application teams in respect to suggesting & supporting process & capability improvement, including the support of our people.

Job Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and development of IT projects and initiatives within Scottish Friendly
  • Contribute to and recommend improvements to existing processes that utilise our core Policy Admin Systems.
  • Work closely with internal and external business stakeholders at a senior level, alongside IT Application delivery teams to understand, test and design new developments often which are complex in nature.
  • Present complex analytical concepts to all levels of the business
  • Work independently with minimal guidance
  • Provide training and mentorship to other colleagues in support of team and individual development
  • Development and maintenance of technical IT solutions in support of business objectives recognising the need for cost effective delivery while balancing the cost of technology ownership.
  • Liaise with external software providers to deliver optimal design, delivery of cost effective solutions while ensuring third party deliver to an acceptable quality level.
  • Ability to problem solve and bring experience to help resolve technical issues
  • Follow the development lifecycle and release process for production implementations and fixes
  • Support, lead rand challenge requirements gathering, analysis, effort estimation, and solution design of projects within the business
  • Support, define and develop delivery best practice while ensuring that our technical delivery adheres to these practices
  • Ensure that our deliveries are implemented into production through the controlled release process
  • Ensure our application code and configuration data is managed and controlled through best practice and use of our source Control repositories
  • Providing Tier 3 Application support in support of our Application Support team while ensuring that our our technical deliveries are transitioned to Tier 1/Tier 2 in a controlled and standardised way.
  • Being able to manage multiple tasks and meet development deadlines
  • Work with colleagues across the business as well as being able to communicate technical ideas to non-technical stakeholders
  • Be a source of technical expertise for the IT Application Delivery team and wider business
Knowledge, Skills & Core Competencies Required
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with all teams within the organisation
  • Desire to learn, develop and ability to multi-task
  • Desire to develop and deliver team level improvements including the support/development of other team members
  • Initiative and problem-solving skills, being able to work through a problem, try different solutions
  • Experience of regulatory projects within Life/Pensions
  • Experience of working with Sonata (essential)
  • Awareness/experience of workflow solutions
  • Experience of working with MGMTalisman (desirable)
  • An understanding of data manipulation and analysis using SQL and Oracle tools and writing/maintaining stored procedures in support of our development community
  • Understanding of T-SQL/PL-SQL and/or Development experience in these technologies
  • Experience of developing skills in SSIS
  • Understanding of XSL
  • Understanding of Java and APIs desirable
  • Good working experience using GitHub and CI/CD pipelines
  • A logical thinker with initiative and ability to problem solve
