GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The post-holder is responsible for managing and developing interfaith relations and social action projects on behalf of the Community Organisation. This includes providing the secretariat for the Optimistic Alliance to build bridges between Muslim and Jewish communities at local and regional levels.

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES INTERFAITH RELATIONS
  • Developing and maintaining sound channels of communication with other religious/faith groups, interfaith organisations and Government departments, and monitoring for opportunities for partnership and engagement in relation to interfaith and the promotion of social cohesion.
  • Briefing senior staff and officers as appropriate on interfaith matters and opportunities for partnership.
  • Actively seeking coalitions on issues of common interest and concern.
  • Organising, preparing briefings for, and reporting on meetings and events to promote interfaith relations and social cohesion.
  • Represent/ensure representation of the Community Organisation /Jewish community at relevant interfaith and social cohesion events, consultations & forums.
  • Research, writing briefing documents and publications.
  • Presenting on the relevant policy areas to stakeholders, and the wider work of the Community Organisation to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Providing policy and logistical support to lay leaders, including the Community Organisation's Social Action (BODSA) committee, the Security, Cohesion and Resilience Division (SRC) and the Community and Education Division (CED).
  • Expanding the UK Jewish community's connections and activities with the Muslim community.
  • Managing the "Optimistic Alliance" Jewish-Muslim interfaith programme through a series of Working Groups and local events.
  • Providing the secretariat to the Optimistic Alliance's working groups and working with the groups' Co-Chairs.
  • Working with local government to convene Jewish-Muslim dialogue forums at a local level.
  • Planning national events for the Jewish and Muslim communities.
  • Communicating about Optimistic Alliance events and achievements to stakeholders and the public.
SOCIAL ACTION
  • Oversee the Community Organisation's campaign work on social action and social justice issues including the environment, international development, humanitarian relief and human rights.
  • Monitor government and non-government sector for opportunities for partnership and engagement on social action.
  • Liaise with and support Deputies and member organisation engaged with social action campaigns and activities and promote activities across the Board and the wider Jewish community.
  • Provide support for Jewish organisations wishing to promote interfaith and social activism and encourage members of Jewish community to initiate/maintain interfaith and social activism at all levels.
  • Build partnerships with government and NGOs working on social action projects.
GENERAL
  • Maintaining a general familiarity with the work of the Community Organisation and the Public Affairs roles in particular to provide cover on urgent issues where necessary.
  • Carrying out such other administrative or other duties as may be requested from time to time by the Community Organisation's senior leadership.
  • This role will require some work on evenings and weekends, and some travel around the UK and abroad.
PERSON SPECIFICATION KNOWLEDGE
  • Outstanding knowledge of current affairs, particularly of relevance to interfaith relations and social cohesion.
  • Outstanding knowledge of fields relevant to social action, including some or all of the environment, climate change, international development, humanitarian relief, human rights.
  • Judaism, the UK Jewish community and its institutions.
  • Education to university degree level or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE
  • Stakeholder engagement, preferably relevant to the fields of interfaith and/or social action.
  • Experience of advocacy, campaigns and awareness-raising.
  • Experience of working on policy, including writing briefings and speeches.
  • Events management and logistics.
  • Producing written resources/briefings.
  • Experience in local or national media.
SKILLS
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Core IT skills.
  • Use of CRM system, particularly Salesforce.
  • Basic knowledge and ability to use popular social media platforms (particularly Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram).
