Job Description
ICU Receptionist - Band 2

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a self-motivated, enthusiastic individual to join our Reception team on the Intensive Care Unit. The post involves working on a busy reception desk, admitting and discharging patients, helping relatives, supporting clinical staff in day-to-day operations, and welcoming visitors to the department.

Full time. Requires flexibility to cover the reception area from 08:00 to 20:00 Monday-Friday and on Saturdays/Sundays, and to provide colleague cover as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assisting patient families, friends and staff visiting the unit.
  • Receive visitors to the unit in a polite and friendly manner.
  • Ensure that relevant Unit, Trust and NHS information is readily available for relatives.
  • Perform routine clerical duties involved in the admission, transfer and discharge of patients, including filing, tracing and maintaining all notes, x-rays, investigation reports, blood transfusion cards and other records pertaining to the unit.
  • Answer telephone enquiries in a friendly, courteous manner with due regard for patient confidentiality and forward information promptly to relevant personnel.
  • Ensure that all patients are admitted, transferred and discharged in a timely manner.
  • Receive, sort, distribute and redirect mail to patients and staff.
  • Complete non-stock requisitions as necessary.
  • Use photocopier and fax machines.
  • Use computer to update demographic patient information, including admissions, transfers and discharge information as directed by nursing staff.
  • Be aware of financial restraints on ordering supplies and services.
  • Collect and deliver items to other wards and departments as instructed.
  • Ensure that all notes are sent to coding immediately following discharge.
  • Process donations to the unit in accordance with Trust policies.
  • Undertake correspondence as directed by the Senior Nursing Team.
  • Undertake appropriate clerical and administrative training to maintain required skills and competencies.
  • Keep up to date with changes to Trust policies and documentation.
Key Qualifications
  • Excellent communication skills, both face-to-face and over the telephone.
  • Computer skills and proficiency in Excel spreadsheets.
  • Ability to handle varied administrative duties and adapt to changing priorities.
