Job Description
We are seeking an experienced API Integration Engineer to support a core banking platform transformation for one of Belgium's most respected financial institutions.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join a forward-thinking digital engineering team, working on the integration of internal and external APIs to enable secure, scalable, and future-ready banking services.

Logistics:
- Position: Freelance API Integration Engineer - Digital Core Banking
- Duration: 12-month rolling contract (extensions highly likely)
- Location: Brussels (Hybrid - 2 days on-site per week)
- Day Rate: €(Competitive & Negotiable)
- Languages: English (Dutch or French is a plus)
- Interview Process: 2 stages with prompt feedback
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain robust RESTful APIs to support banking applications and third-party integrations
- Collaborate with architecture and security teams to define API standards, versioning, and governance
- Work with product teams to understand requirements and translate them into scalable services
- Monitor and improve API performance, reliability, and traceability
- Integrate APIs across various backend systems and SaaS platforms using tools such as Apigee, MuleSoft, or Kong
- Ensure full compliance with security protocols, authentication standards (OAuth2), and regulatory expectations (e.g. PSD2)
Ideal Candidate:
- 5+ years of backend/API development experience in Java or Node.js
- Strong expertise in REST API design, integration, and platform management
- Familiarity with Kafka, OAuth2, OpenAPI/Swagger, and cloud-native tooling
- Comfortable working with legacy systems and modern microservice architectures
- Self-directed and confident in communicating directly with architects and technical leads
- Able to thrive in a fast-paced team of experienced engineers with minimal handholding
Desirable:
- Experience with enterprise service buses or API gateways (Apigee, MuleSoft, AWS API Gateway)
- Previous exposure to the banking/financial sector or regulated environments
- Understanding of event-driven patterns, data security, and compliance frameworks
- Experience working in CI/CD environments with GitLab, Jenkins, or Azure DevOps
