Job Description
Instructor of Life Sciences (Newport Campus)

Arkansas State University Newport. The Instructor of Life Sciences provides effective instruction in Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology and related fields. This 9 month faculty position reports to the Dean for STEM.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and grade students' class work, laboratory performance, assignments, and papers.
  • Supervise students' laboratory work.
  • Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
  • Prepare and deliver lectures to undergraduate or graduate students on topics such as Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Botany, and related courses at the college level.
  • Compile, administer, and grade examinations, or assign this work to others.
  • Establish, teach, and monitor students' compliance with safety rules for handling chemicals, equipment, and other hazardous materials.
  • Supervise and monitor laboratory facilities in accordance with institutional, state, and federal safety guidelines.
  • Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, and methods of instruction in both traditional and online classroom settings.
  • Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
  • Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom discussions.
  • Participate in conferences, seminars, and training sessions to keep abreast of developments in the field of study, and integrate relevant information into training programs.
  • Maintain accessibility to students via email, phone, or personal conferences; maintain course/student records such as student grades, attendance, and training activity details in accordance with FERPA regulations and submit records by established deadlines.
  • Keep a flexible weekly schedule that best facilitates student learning and access.
  • Remain current in academic or program discipline, including maintaining licensure, certification, or continuing education requirements where appropriate; receive training and stay abreast of current research and advances within the field of study to increase student engagement and promote student learning.
  • Participate in college professional development activities.
  • Help students identify and achieve their educational goals through the college's advising process, as well as providing incidental academic advice to students in classes.
  • Post and keep office hours to facilitate interaction with students, the college community, and the public.
  • Serve on standing ad hoc committees, advisory boards, hiring committees, faculty senate, or as a student organization advisor; attend local, regional, state, or national meetings where required or necessary for the discipline.
  • Mentor and assist in orienting new faculty, either formally or informally where appropriate or required by department or division.
  • Attend commencement or other ceremonies appropriate to the faculty member's discipline or program; attend departmental, divisional, and college wide meetings where appropriate or as required by supervisor; perform other academically related duties as assigned by instructor's supervisor.
  • Perform certain administrative or service duties in support of the Science program.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
Additional Responsibilities

When an individual accepts a teaching appointment at the college, they also accept responsibilities and obligations as a professional educator. Under the supervision of the Division Dean, the faculty's chief duty is the instruction of assigned classes; these duties take precedence over all others. In addition to teaching, faculty should assume responsibility for professional development, service to the college, and other duties assigned by their supervisors. They are also obligated to abide by and support college policies and must be committed to the learning college philosophy as well as the goals and objectives of the university.

Each semester's instructional load will be assigned by the faculty member's supervisor, which will be determined by the nature of the position, the needs of the department, and workload guidelines established by college policy. Evening, weekend, and online instruction may be required.

Development of and participation in special college projects, new instructional techniques, an assessment plan in the discipline, student advising, and participation in other college and community service activities consistent with the mission of the college.

Qualifications

Potential candidates should be able to instruct courses in Biology, Anatomy, Microbiology, Botany, and related fields appropriate to the two year college level. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The following represent the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and Experience

Minimum requirements include a master's degree with 18 semester credit hours in the major area of concentration. A Doctorate is preferred. Experience with instructional technology and online coursework as well as prior educational teaching experience is desirable.

Specific Skills
  • Communication Skills: Strong writing and verbal communication; ability to produce reports, correspondence, and policy manuals; effective presentation of information and response to questions from students, faculty, administration, or the general public.
  • Mathematical Skills: Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Critical Thinking Skills: Ability to solve practical problems, interpret written or oral instructions, and make decisions of minor and major significance.
  • Use of Equipment and Computers: Regular use of laboratory equipment and office equipment such as desktop/laptop computers and related software.
  • Software Skills Required: Intermediate Word Processing/Typing, Spreadsheet; Basic Alphanumeric Data Entry, Database, PowerPoint.
